Kicken Kris a winner again

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Michael Matz never doubted Kicken Kris's ability, but he was puzzled by the colt's latest loss in the Grade 1 Manhattan last month. On Saturday at Belmont Park in the $150,000 , Kicken Kris was back in the winner's circle for the first time since October with a 1 1/2-length victory over Better Talk Now.

Kicken Kris, the 6-5 favorite with Edgar Prado in the saddle, made a bold move around the far turn and ran down the pacesetter, L'Oiseau d'Argent, in midstretch of the Grade 2 Bowling Green before a crowd of 7,316.

Chandtrue still perfect (ho-hum)

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Chandtrue remained unbeaten in four starts following a victory in Saturday's $106,400 on Saturday, but the win failed to excite trainer Bob Hess Jr.

Chandtrue won his third consecutive stakes in the Grade 3 Juvenile, finishing a half-length in front of Actxecutive despite not being asked in the final sixteenth by jockey Victor Espinoza. Chandtrue ($2.60) ran six furlongs in a modest 1:10.88.

"I wasn't overly impressed, but he ran a good race," Hess said. "He had to struggle to get past Actxecutive. He didn't blow by him."

Arlington: Cryptograph wide winner

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Cryptograph drew a wide post and he had a wide trip - and he still won the $100,000 Round Table Stakes at Arlington Park. Which basically is what everybody expected.

Calder: Secret Request overcomes

MIAMI - Secret Request won the $75,000 Nancy's Glitter Handicap at Calder on Saturday, despite interference from her own stablemate.

Secret Request raced in perfect striking position along the inside behind the pacesetters Pampered Princess and Romanesque in the 1 1/16-mile Nancy's Glitter. Secret Request was beginning to launch her rally along the rail when she was put in tight quarters by her entrymate Dakota Light and forced to steady sharply approaching the quarter pole.

Offer you can't refuse: Don Corleone at $121

Don Corleone, by far the longest price on the board at 59-1, held off 11-1 shot Seven Come Eleven to win the $164,000 New York Derby at Finger Lakes Saturday. Work With Me, the 2-1 second favorite, finished third in the 10-horse field of New York-bred 3-year-olds. Don Corleone paid $121.50 to win, and the winning 5-8 exacta returned $1,220.

The New York Derby was the second leg of OTBs' Big Apple Triple, a three-race series for statebred 3-year-olds that ends with the $150,000 Albany at Saratoga Aug. 25.

Ellis Park: Knox rallies from last

Brice Blanc, known best for his skill as a turf jockey, rode Knox to victory in the $75,000 Regaey Island Stakes at Ellis Park, a one-mile stakes race that was transferred from a rain-soaked turf course to a fast main track.

Early in the race, Knox appeared an unlikely winner. He trailed as 6-5 favorite Big City Spender raced comfortably on the lead with opening fractions of 24.41 seconds and 48.61.

Woodbine: Mona Rose beats 'Glora'

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mona Rose wore down 3-5 favorite Inish Glora in deep stretch to capture the Grade 3, $209,450 at Woodbine.

Eurico Rosa da Silva rode Mona Rose in the Dance Smartly, which attracted only four fillies and mares. Mona Rose stalked her three rivals throughout most of the nine-furlong turf event. Inish Glora and Strait From Texas vied for the lead during a slow opening quarter-mile in 24.94 seconds, and were joined by Classic Stamp through a half-mile in 48.17. The trio picked up the pace on the turn, getting the three-quarters in 1:11.40.

Thistledown: Oh So Easy, easily

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Oh So Easy rallied from just off the pace to win the $75,000 Rose DeBartolo Memorial Stakes for fillies and mares by 2 3/4 lengths at Thistledown. Odds-on favorite Ashwood C C assumed command after a quarter-mile in the 1 1/8-mile race and set the pace until the eighth pole. She finished second, three-quarters of a length in front of a rallying Whitewater Way, who took third.

Prairie table games get OK

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on Thursday unanimously approved the addition of 33 table games at Prairie Meadows.

State lawmakers had passed a bill allowing the addition of table games at Prairie Meadows as well as the state's two greyhound tracks this spring. All three tracks already house slot machines.

Day to tour for Chaplaincy

Jockey Pat Day will begin a summer tour of racetracks to raise funds for the Race Track Chaplaincy of America on Tuesday at River Downs in Cincinnati.

Day will meet fans and sign autographs before the races at River Downs. He will ride the racing program, and following the races will be guest speaker at a dinner in the Turf Terrace. Tickets to the dinner are $50. More information is available form the River Downs publicity department at (513) 354-8308.

Day plans to visit at least a dozen tracks during his tour. The tour will end at Keeneland Oct. 8.
