ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Dermot Weld has done it again, sending a horse from Ireland to win the American Derby at Arlington Park for the third time in five years. Saturday, on Million Preview Day here, Simple Exchange looked not just like a horse for the Grade 2, $250,000 , which he won by a neck over Cool Conductor, but also like one for the Grade 1 Secretariat on Aug. 14.

Susan's Angel wins for Lukas

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Susan's Angel wore down the pacesetting Schedule to win the $60,000 Serena's Song Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

It was only fitting that trainer D. Wayne Lukas won the race, which is named for his champion filly who beat the boys in the 1995 Haskell Invitational.

Susan's Angel got up by a head to win the prep for Monmouth's top event for3-year-old fillies, the Grade 2, $200,000 Monmouth Breeders' Cup Oaks on Aug. 15.

Sterling Cat wins CTBA

DEL MAR, Calif. - Sterling Cat remained unbeaten in two starts after a hard-fought win in Friday's $125,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes at Del Mar.

The victory has owner Jim Vreeland hoping Sterling Cat can be a factor in the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante on Aug. 28, the top race for 2-year-old fillies at this meeting.

"That's where we're headed and we stopped here along the way," Vreeland said.

Useful prep for Fire Slam

David Carroll could not have written a better script himself.

Fire Slam, the star 3-year-old sprinter that Carroll trains for Stan Fulton, was a winner Saturday in the Don Bernhardt Stakes at Ellis Park without being fully extended. With jockey Pat Day riding with complete confidence, Fire Slam prevailed by the most measured of heads in the $97,500 Bernhardt over a gritty Unbridled America.

Delaware: Highway Prospector gets up

Highway Prospector, the third choice in a field of five, used a strong, well-timed late kick to win the six-furlong, $100,000 Vincent Moscareli Memorial Handicap at Delaware Park.

Unhurried early under Abel Castellano Jr., Highway Prospector moved from second-last into contention after three furlongs, was fanned four wide entering the stretch, then blew by the leaders to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Don Six, the 7-5 favorite, chased Sing Me Back Home for a half, went by him in deep stretch, but failed to hold off the winner and finished second.

Woodbine: Soaring Free sets record

Soaring Free set a North American turf course record for seven furlongs Saturday when he won the Ontario Jockey Club Stakes at Woodbine in 1:19.38. The previous record of 1:19.88 was set by Officialpermission at Belmont Park in 2000.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Soaring Free set a North American record for seven furlongs on the turf while winning the $107,000 Ontario Jockey Club Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths at Woodbine.

Soaring Free ran the distance in 1:19.38 under jockey Todd Kabel. The previous record of 1:19.88 was set by Officialpermission at Belmont in 2000. Woodbine's previous record of 1:20.20 was established by Wild Zone in 1995.

Philadelphia: 'Joseph' gets sweet ride

Prince Joseph, helped by a scratched morning-line favorite and a cagey Anthony Black ride, won the $52,950 Iroquois Handicap at Philadelphia Park.

Black had Prince Joseph on the lead early in the 1 1/16-mile race, eased him back to second behind pacesetter Valleyman for a while, then regained the lead in midstretch and drew off to win by 2 1/4 lengths.

Prince Joseph was timed in 1:43.31 over a fast track and paid $6.40. Docent, the 6-5 favorite, was in contention on the turn but gave way.

Colonial: Dubleo does it again

Odds-on choice Dubleo, shipped in by New York-based trainer Todd Pletcher, won the $50,000 Chenery for 2-year-olds at Colonial Downs.

Dubleo set the pace under pressure from Late Night Lover, shook clear in upper stretch, and then held off the closing kick of Black Tie to win by three-quarters of a length. Dubleo, ridden by Hector Karamanos, ran the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.71 on a sloppy surface and paid $3.60. It was the second time Pletcher shipped him in to Colonial Downs and won.

Retama: Gold Storm all the way

Gold Storm led throughout for a neck win over High Strike Zone in the $40,000 J.R. Straus Memorial Stakes on Friday night at Retama Park near San Antonio. The six-furlong race was the opening-night feature at the track.

Gold Storm ($4.80) broke sharply in the Straus and ran the opening quarter in 22.63 seconds. He fended off challengers on the turn, was two lengths clear of his rivals in the stretch, then dug in to hold off a late bid from High Strike Zone.

Gold Storm covered the distance in 1:10.20. Larry Taylor rode the winner for trainer Bubba Cascio.
