INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Little sister can be invited to the party now. Intercontinental, following in the footsteps of Banks Hill and Heat Haze, joined them as Grade 1 winners with an emphatic, two-length win in Sunday's Grade 1, $500,000 .
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Shug McGaughey hadn't sent a horse to California for 11 years, since the fall Lure won the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita. It's quite a wait. But it wasn't long enough. Sunday's took more than 121 seconds. Still not enough time. No, not until a lengthy stewards inquiry was completed another five minutes later was Good Reward finally made the official winner of the Grade 1, $500,000 race that completed Hollywood Park's Autumn Turf Festival.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Thunder Touch made his stakes debut a winning one, coming from off the pace to upset Sunday's Grade 3, $111,600 by 1 1/4 lengths at Aqueduct.
Thunder Touch, the 126 low-weight ridden by Rafael Bejarano, survived a claim of foul by jockey Javier Castellano, who steadied Papua in deep stretch behind Thunder Touch and Uncle Camie. The stewards disallowed the foul claim and Papua finished second in this race for the second straight year. It was one-half length back to Eavesdropper in third. Kiaran McLaughlin trains both Thunder Touch and Eavesdropper.
Sea Dub returned to one of his best distances Saturday night and drove to a two and three-quarter length win over Payasito in the $40,000 at Sam Houston Race Park. It was another half-length back in third to Run to the Border.
Sea Dub ($8.20) sat in second behind Payasito in the mile and a sixteenth turf race while that one was clear through six furlongs in 1:14.68. The eventual winner overtook him late, covering the distance over a course rated firm that had some give in 1:46.57.
Luis Quinonez rode the winner for trainer Joe Petalino.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The no nonsense Leroidesanimaux seems to like winning races more than the winner's circle ceremony.
After scoring his fifth consecutive victory in Saturday's $400,000 at Hollywood Park, Leroidesanimaux threw a minor fit when a blanket of flowers was draped over his neck. He quickly calmed after they were removed.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Of all the horses that trainer Todd Pletcher ran at Pico Central this year, Lion Tamer had to be considered the least likely to beat him.
But Lion Tamer did just that, rallying from last to make the lead in upper stretch and then persevering to a 1 1/4-length victory in Saturday's Grade 1, $350,000 at Aqueduct. Badge of Silver, who chased the pace before falling back, re-rallied to nose out Pico Central for second. Pico Central lost his right hind shoe.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Rockport Harbor proved he has as much heart as he does talent. Galloping Grocer proved his talent won't limit him to success exclusively in New York-bred company.
Rockport Harbor and Galloping Grocer - a combined 6 for 6 entering Saturday - staged a memorable battle in the Grade 2, $200,000 at Aqueduct, with Rockport Harbor having just enough to hold off Galloping Grocer by a neck. It was 8 1/4 lengths back to Killenaule in third.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Mike Mitchell's working vacation became simply a vacation when he was forced to scratch Kela from Saturday's Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct after the horse contracted a fever on Friday.
Mitchell said that Kela was diagnosed with a 102 temperature Friday afternoon and that it climbed to 104 later in the day. Following treatment with the medication Butazolidin, the fever was down to 101 by Saturday morning.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - John McKee topped off his first Churchill Downs riding title by giving Greater Good a textbook trip when the colt rallied from far back to win the $223,200 on Saturday, closing day of the 21-day fall meet.
McKee, riding for his main client, trainer Bob Holthus, saved ground throughout the 1 1/16 miles of the Grade 2 KJC. As the field crowded together for the stretch run, Greater Good, who had just one horse beaten into the final turn, flew through an opening near the rail before drawing clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths.
