Boulanger has surgery

Jockey Gary Boulanger remained in critical condition Monday after undergoing surgery Sunday evening to remove his spleen and relieve pressure on his brain. Boulanger, 37, was injured in a spill during Sunday's $100,000 at Gulfstream Park when his horse, In Hand, broke down approaching the far turn of the Grade 3 turf race.

According to Corey Moran, Boulanger's agent, the rider came through both surgeries well, and although heavily sedated, was responding to commands from his doctors on Monday morning.

Country Be Gold makes the grade

Country Be Gold, winless in 21 previous graded-stakes races, finally broke through, splitting horses twice in the final quarter-mile to win the Grade 3, $110,300 by three-quarters of a length over 6-5 favorite Aggadan.

Aggadan, the 123-pound highweight, held second after prompting a hot early pace. Mahzouz finished a neck behind Aggadan in third.

Boulanger critical after Gulfstream spill

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Jockey Gary Boulanger underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition Sunday evening as a result of injuries suffered in a spill during that afternoon's $100,000 at Gulfstream Park.

Corey Moran, Boulanger's agent told Daily Racing Form at 9:00 p.m. Sunday, the Canadian born jockey was to undergo "brain surgery" but did not know any other details about his rider's condition at the time.

Salt Champ captures Santa Monica Handicap

ARCADIA, Calif. - Twice in the stretch of Sunday's $250,000 at Santa Anita, Gary Stevens feared that his late rally on Salt Champ would come up short. He was delighted an Argentine import with a bottomless source of energy.

"I kept finding new gears," Stevens said. "I thought she was all out two different times and she wasn't. She had more."

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Host outdueled Navesink River through a protracted stretch drive at Gulfstream Park in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 , a race that was marred by the fatal breakdown of longshot In Hand and apparent serious injuries suffered by his jockey, Gary Boulanger.

In Hand broke down while in midpack with three furlongs remaining in the 1 3/8-mile grass race. He was euthanized. Another runner, Macaw, fell over the prone In Hand, but he continued on after dislodging his rider, Eddie Castro.

Hoh Buzzard prevails in Brown Bess Handicap

ALBANY, Calif. - Hoh Buzzard ($4.40) got a perfect stalking trip behind Marty's Zee, took over in the stretch and easily defeated Uraib in the $100,000 on Golden Gate Fields' closing day Sunday.

The 5-year-old Irish mare covered 1 1/16 miles on a soft Lakeside Turf Course in 1:44.68, defeating Uraib, who was last early, by 1 1/4 lengths as she was easing away late. Last year's Brown Bess runner-up Hooked On Niners rallied for third.

"When I asked her, she gave me good speed. She went very easy," winning jockey Tony Farina said.

Blazing Exploit wins Bucharest Stakes

Blazing Exploit wins the $40,000 Bucharest Stakes at Sam Houston Race Par on Saturday.

Blazing Exploit picked up the second stakes win of his career Saturday night when he led throughout to win the $40,000 Bucharest Stakes for 3-year-olds at Sam Houston Race Park.

He won by a half-length over Dwight Polite, who was two and a half lengths clear of third-place finisher Count The Bucks.

Blazing Exploit ($5) set fractions of 22.24 seconds for the opening quarter and 46.17 seconds for the half-mile mark in the Bucharest, then went on to cover six furlongs over a track rated good in 1:12.06.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - On a day filled with upsets, the biggest and best was saved for last when 70-1 Musique Toujours outlasted Zakocity by a neck to win the $1 million at Gulfstream Park.

Musique Toujours, who was claimed by owners Lloyd DeBruycker and Richard Glassman for $40,000 in November 2003, became the seventh longshot to win on Saturday's eight-race Sunshine Millions program at Gulfstream and Santa Anita Park. He paid $142.20. Lost in the Fog was the only winning Sunshine Millions favorite.

Sweet Lips stuns favorites in Distaff

ARCADIA, Calif. - The promising career of Sweet Lips finally took off Saturday at Santa Anita.

After winning five of her first seven starts and then finishing ninth in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes last month, Sweet Lips rebounded with an upset victory in the $500,000 for California-breds and Florida-breds.

The race marked the first time she was fitted with blinkers.

Ridden by Rene Douglas, Sweet Lips ($27.60) rallied from last, running 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.64.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Star Over the Bay is back.

The winner of the three major stakes in the summer and fall of 2004, Star Over the Bay returned from a three-month layoff on Saturday to win the richest race of his career, the $500,000 for California-breds and Florida-breds.

It was not an easy victory

Star Over the Bay ($11.80) was pressured through the final quarter-mile by A to the Z, the 2-1 favorite, and Union Place, a stakes winner at Gulfstream Park earlier this month.
