The Beyer-challenged Hot Storm wins the Sunshine Million Oaks at 21-1.

NEW ORLEANS - Several horses stabled at Fair Grounds shipped to Santa Anita last weekend with unexpected results, both good and bad. The outstanding turf horse G P Fleet, trained by Steve Flint, turned in a surprisingly sour performance Saturday in the Sunshine Millions Turf, and Tamweel, trained by Tom Amoss, ran poorly in the Grade 1 Santa Monica Handicap on Sunday, her first start since finishing fourth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

Valentine Dancer defends her title in Saturday's Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Craig Lewis was at his lowest on the weekend of Jan. 22 and 23.

He was in Arcadia Methodist Hospital, across the street from Santa Anita, with a bulging disc in his back that briefly left him paralyzed.

Lewis was released after five days, but his doctors forbade him from traveling to Gulfstream Park Saturday to watch Valentine Dancer attempt to defend her title in the $500,000 .

Two turf races may yield stakes horses

ARCADIA, Calif. - With dry weather expected this week, Santa Anita is finally carding the sort of grass races the racing program lacked during a wet January.

Wednesday, two $52,000 races highlight the eight-race program. The races may serve as stakes preps for some runners.

The fourth race, an optional claimer over 1 1/4 miles, has drawn eight runners, including Ring of Friendship and Noble Kinsman, the first two finishers in the California Cup Starter Handicap last October.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - High Fly is undefeated, untested, and will go into Saturday's Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes a heavy favorite to keep his record unblemished. But despite holding such a hot hand, trainer Bill White is leaving no stone unturned preparing High Fly for the race.

Pick six has carryover of over $140K

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Owners of Florida-breds and California-breds got to compete for big money last Saturday at Gulfstream Park in the Sunshine Millions. On Wednesday, it's the horseplayers' turn.

A meet-high pick-six carryover of $140,247 awaits bettors at Gulfstream Park, which has been chock-a-block with longshot winners throughout the meet. Wednesday's card has 10 races, so the pick six will begin with the fifth.

First post time is 12:45 p.m. Eastern, with the fifth scheduled to go at 3 p.m.

71-day meet marks start of new era

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Bay Meadows opens a 71-day meet Wednesday with a new management team in place. The meet, which ends May 8, is the first under management of the Bay Meadows Land Company, which owns the track but for the last five years had leased it to Magna Entertainment.

Among the improvements made by new management is to spruce up the track. Televisions have been added throughout the plant, and the turf club has been recarpeted.

Cooperation, but still competition

ALBANY, Calif. - There will be a retro look to northern California racing in 2005.

With the decision of the Bay Meadows racetrack property-owner, Bay Meadows Land Company, to conduct racing by itself rather than lease the track to Magna Entertainment, northern California's two private tracks will once again operate as separate entities. When Bay Meadows opens its meet Wednesday, it will be the first time since 2000, when Magna began operating both Bay Meadows and Golden Gate, that the two tracks will be run under separate management.

A shot at riches for $216

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - For those who can't wait for Sunday's Super Bowl for action, there is a pick-six carryover of $141,195 at Aqueduct on Wednesday. Smaller tickets may have a chance at success, since Wednesday marks the first day that 10 simulcast sites that offer rebates will not have access to Aqueduct's pools.

Still, without a solid single it will take a decent bankroll to hit it. Here is a $216 play based on dry conditions.

Don Six frisky after posting 116 Beyer

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - As impressed as trainer Scott Lake was with Don Six's performance in winning last Saturday's at Aqueduct, he was even more amazed with how the 5-year-old horse looked 40 hours after equaling the stakes record in the 97-year-old sprint event.

"I'm telling you, this horse, he's just getting better every day,'' Lake said from Philadelphia Park on Monday. "He came back off this race like he never ran. It's just incredible.''

Millions cards' handle dips

Because of a sharp decline at Santa Anita, total handle on the Sunshine Millions cards Saturday at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita fell about 6 percent from last year.

Handle on the 10-race card at Gulfstream, which included four Sunshine Millions races (Filly-Mare Sprint, Dash, Filly-Mare Turf, Classic), rose about 4 percent from last year, from $13,819,836 to $14,370,119. But betting on the 10 races at Santa Anita, including the Oaks, Sprint, Turf, and Distaff, declined about 14 percent, from $18,481,475 to $15,934,999.
