ARCADIA, Calif. - The $250,000 Santa Maria Handicap at Santa Anita on Sunday has such a deep field that all 10 entrants are stakes winners. Seven have won graded or group stakes.
Such a talented field in the Grade 1 Santa Maria offers a puzzle to bettors, who must choose between such prominent hopefuls as defending champion Star Parade; Hollywood Story, the winner of the Grade 2 Bayakoa Handicap in December; Musical Chimes, a multiple major stakes winner on turf; and Miss Loren, the durable Argentine mare who is seeking the 13th win of her career.
A foot injury suffered by Roman Ruler that will keep him out of Sunday's Grade 2, $150,000 at Santa Anita is the latest hiccup for a promising colt whose career has been marked by brilliant performances and minor, ill-timed setbacks.
Roman Ruler was entered on Friday morning in the seven-furlong San Vicente, but trainer Bob Baffert said Friday afternoon that Roman Ruler would not run.
"The thing is only one month old," Baffert said of a quarter crack that flared anew on Friday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - During the opening half of his 2004 campaign, Mustanfar was never more than one big race away from joining the upper echelon of the 3-year-old division. During the second half of the season, he came even closer to adding his name to the list of the country's top turf horses.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Don Six will step up in class and stretch out slightly in distance for his next start, the Grade 2, $200,000 General George Handicap at Laurel Park on Feb. 21.
Don Six has been the star of the winter meet at Aqueduct, winning the Gravesend and Paumonok handicaps most impressively. In the Paumonok, he equaled the stakes record by running six furlongs in 1:08.87. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 116 for the effort.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Two veterans who love the Longden Turf Course renew their rivalry in Sunday's Bay Meadows feature.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Quartern, the undisputed leader of the local 3-year-old filly division following her 7 3/4-length win in last weekend's six-furlong Ms. Stakes at Portland Meadows, will attempt to extend her dominion to route distances.
Trainer Ben Root said that Quartern, a daughter of Danjur who races for Al and Jodi Peterson, will test her route ability in the one-mile Mary Goldblatt Stakes on March 5. If all goes well, she will go on to the one-mile Mt. St. Helens Stakes on March 26 and the 1 1/16-mile Oregon Oaks on April 16.
Fans will have to dig deeper into their pockets to attend this year's Belmont Stakes, as ticket prices for prime clubhouse seats were increased by 162 percent over last year.
Also, the New York Racing Association will prohibit fans from bringing alcoholic beverages into Belmont Park on Belmont Day, June 11.
Tickets for the best clubhouse seats are $110, compared with $45 last year. That includes the $5 cost of admission. Clubhouse seats are also priced at $65 and $45, with the cheaper seats having an obstructed view.
