OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Galloping Grocer finished a disappointing fourth in his 3-year-old debut Saturday as Sort It Out, another New York-bred, stole the spotlight in the at Aqueduct.
PHOENIX - It was a good day for Southern California invaders, as they swept the three featured stakes on Turf Paradise's Super Saturday card. The Everest Stables and trainer Marcelo Polanco in particular enjoyed the rainy festivities as they landed two of the three top prizes.
NEW ORLEANS - Pioneer Boy, a multiple stakes winner who returned as a claimer last November after a 15-month layoff, goes for a claiming price again Monday in the feature race at Fair Grounds, a $40,000 optional claimer for 4-year-olds and up at six furlongs on the main track.
NEW ORLEANS - Summerly, looking much like a contender for the Kentucky Oaks, easily won the Grade 3, $150,000 on Saturday at Fair Grounds. It was Summerly's first stakes win, but probably not her last.
Summerly ($5) had an outside post position, but she and jockey Donnie Meche secured good position going into the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile Silverbulletday. With Cee's Irish down on the inside, hanging on to a narrow lead over Summerly, the pace was quick. And that did not bother Summerly in the least.
NEW ORLEANS - Inexperienced and in an unfamiliar land, Wanderin Boy earned his stripes in Saturday's at Fair Grounds. He set a fast pace, held off a determined run from the millionaire Pollard's Vision, and probably earned a trip back to New Orleans from Florida for the New Orleans Handicap.
OLDSMAR Fla. - If there were ever a "horse for the course," it's Rizzi Girl over the Tampa Bay turf. This season she's 2 for 3 over the grass here, and she was unlucky not to win her other start when she finished second, beaten a head. From 13 starts over the local turf, she has won 5 races and finished second 6 times.
Absent Friend dug in through the stretch to overtake pacesetter Mauk Four and earn a half-length victory in the Grade 3, $100,000 at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. It was another 4 1/2 lengths back to Separato.
Roman Chapa rode Absent Friend, who gave the jockey his fourth stakes win in less than one month of racing at the meet.
Tempus Fugit, on the lead the whole way, met the challenge of heavily favored Golden Marlin, then pulled away to win the $50,000 Likely Exchange Stakes at Turfway Park.
Ridden by Orlando Mojica, Tempus Fugit sped straight to an open lead in the one-mile Likely Exchange, tracked closest by 45-1 shot Moonlit Romance. Meanwhile, Golden Marlin, who had a great stalking trip under Dean Sarvis, edged nearly abreast of the front-runner at the quarter pole, but Tempus Fugit had plenty in reserve and pulled away to win by 3 1/4 lengths.
Grab Bag made her first start since last May a good one when she ran down 3-5 favorite Ebony Breeze to score a one-length victory in the $60,000 Manatee Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.
Ridden by Tommy Turner for trainer Tom Skiffington, the 6-year-old Grab Bag ($17) was making her first start since finishing third to Secret Request in the 1 1/16-mile Cut the Charm Stakes last spring at Calder. She had been training well at Palm Meadows and was up to the task in the seven-furlong Manatee, covering the distance on a fast track in 1:24.22.
