Pawyne Princess needs A game

NEW ORLEANS - Pawyne Princess, who smashed an allowance field in her first start at Fair Grounds, returns Sunday as the probable favorite in the $75,000 Chou Croute Handicap for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the main track.

Pawyne Princess will have to be on top of her game to handle Spectacular Lisa, last year's Chou Croute winner.

Keeneland joins tracks testing for milkshakes

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland Racecourse plans to test horses for alkalizing agents such as those found in milkshakes during its upcoming spring meeting, the president of the track told the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council at a meeting on Friday.

Nick Nicholson, Keeneland's president, told the council that Keeneland plans to test every horse that races at the track for the substances, which can be administered through nasal-gastric tubes, in feed substances and pastes, and by injection. Keeneland's spring meet begins on April 7 and runs for three weeks.

Don Six heads Gen. George

The rejuvenated Don Six will seek his most prestigious prize to date on Monday when he heads a nine-horse field entered in the Grade 2, $200,000 at Laurel Park.

Don Six, winner of the Gravesend and Paumonok handicaps at Aqueduct in his last two starts, drew post 6 and was made the 9-5 morning-line favorite. He will carry co-high weight of 118 pounds along with Gators N Bears, the third-place finisher in this race last year.

Remington shuffles executives

Scott Wells has been named general manager of Remington Park in Oklahoma City in one of several management changes the track announced Friday. Larry Craft has been named Remington's director of racing, and Mike Shamburg has been named racing secretary.

Craft will also remain director of racing at Lone Star Park, like Remington owned by Magna Entertainment Corp.

Aly Bubba can win despite long layoff

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Aly Bubba has been gone the longest, but he might still be the one to beat when five older horses - only one of whom has run this year - meet in Sunday's Bay Meadows feature.

Although the field is short, it should be an interesting betting race.

Galloping Grocer bruises right foot

Galloping Grocer may skip the Fountain of Youth after hurting his foot during training.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Galloping Grocer, a leading Kentucky Derby contender, suffered a bruised right front foot during training Thursday and may be forced to skip the Fountain of Youth on March 5 at Gulfstream Park.

"The Fountain of Youth right now is questionable," trainer Dominick Schettino said Friday.

Excessivepleasure aims high

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Doug O'Neill hopes a sprint stakes for California-breds Sunday at Santa Anita provides a launch pad for Excessivepleasure, whose sights are set on a return to Dubai for another crack at a $1 million race there next month.

First up is the $125,000 Sensational Star Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, and O'Neill and owner Ty Leatherman expect Excessivepleasure to regain top form after falling short in back-to-back routes.

Pico Central to miss San Carlos

Pico Central will miss the San Carlos and may train up to the Golden Shaheen.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Pico Central, one of the nation's top sprinters of 2004, will miss a chance to defend his title in the $150,000 San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita on Feb. 26 because of a bruised foot, trainer Paulo Lobo said.

The Grade 2 San Carlos was meant to be Pico Central's prep to the $2 million Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai on March 26. Lobo said Friday that he hopes Pico Central can still make it to the Golden Shaheen, the world's richest sprint, even though he will not have a prep race.
