Saintliness attempts to stay perfect

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Ghostzapper was not the only Frank Stronach-bred and owned 4-year-old who went 4 for 4 in 2004. Saintliness, a daughter of Holy Bull, won all four of her starts, albeit in lesser company than her Breeders' Cup Classic-winning stablemate.

Saturday, Saintliness will put her undefeated record to the test when she makes her stakes debut in the $75,000 Affectionately Handicap at Aqueduct. The Affectionately, run at 1 1/16 miles over the inner track, shares billing with the $75,000 Count Fleet Stakes, a race for 3-year-olds that was postponed from last Saturday.

More Smoke a nice surprise

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
More Smoke, winning the Dancing Count, has won three of his four starts.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - John Zimmerman said More Smoke didn't show enough in the mornings to run him for anything higher than a $25,000 claiming price in his debut last October. Now, Zimmerman considers himself fortunate he didn't lose the colt.

More Smoke won his debut and has gone on to win twice more from three additional starts, including the Dancing Count Stakes at Pimlico on New Year's Day. Now, More Smoke will try to give Zimmerman his first win at a New York track when he runs in Monday's $75,000 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct.

Add In the Gold to Zito's riches

Horsephotos
Edgar Prado rode In the Gold for his meet-leading eighth win Thursday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Nick Zito has won two Kentucky Derbies and last year sent out Birdstone to capture both the Belmont and Travers. But when it comes to 3-year-olds, Zito can be a ladies man as well.

In 2003, Zito won the 3-year-old filly championship with Birdstone's older sister Bird Town. This year he may have another top contender in that division with In the Gold, a daughter of Golden Missile, who got her 3-year-old campaign off to a good start with a first-level allowance victory on Thursday.

Tidal Wave a threat up front

Tidal Wave, a 5-year-old with 25 lifetime starts, has only run once in a stakes, finishing third in a $35,000 sprint at Suffolk Downs in January 2003.

Although Tidal Wave's credentials are modest compared to some of his competitors' in Saturday's $50,000 Native Dancer at Pimlico, he does possess one important quality the others lack.
