Baze tops Shoemaker as No. 2 rider in wins

Russell Baze now has more wins than any jockey except Laffit Pincay Jr.

ALBANY, Calif. - Russell Baze moved past Bill Shoemaker into second place on the all-time jockey victory list Saturday at Golden Gate Fields, riding four winners to bring his victory total to 8,834, one more than Shoemaker. Baze, 46, won two more races Sunday, putting him 694 behind Laffit Pincay Jr., the all-time leader with 9,530 victories. Pincay was 52 when he surpassed Shoemaker as No. 1 on Dec. 10, 1999.

Baze's milestone victory came aboard Hollow Memories ($4.40) in the seventh race, a six-furlong sprint for $4,000 claimers. Hollow Memories won by 4 1/2 lengths.

Whilly takes San Marcos

ARCADIA, Calif. - Whilly is the pot of gold for jockey Felipe Martinez. The journeyman rider, who usually punches the clock in lower-level races, got his first stakes win at Santa Anita with Whilly on the meet's opening day Dec. 26, then earned the first graded stakes win of his career when Whilly led from start to finish in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 at Santa Anita.

Savorthetime makes the grade

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Steve Asmussen was looking to get some black type on Savorthetime's resume, which was why he shipped the 6-year-old mare from her winter home at Fair Grounds to Gulfstream Park for Saturday's $100,000 . His decision proved to be a wise one after Savorthetime rallied to a 2 1/2-length victory over the pacesetting Cologny to win the Grade 3 dash.

Patriot Act to have knee surgery

NEW ORLEANS - Patriot Act, the Neil Howard-trained 3-year-old who finished second in the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland last year, has been taken out of training and will undergo surgery Feb. 2 to remove a chip from his left knee.

A William Farish homebred by A.P. Indy, Patriot Act will be sent to Kentucky for the surgery.

"We found a chip in his left knee," said Howard. "There was always a little spur there, but it was just a flake."

Souris completes Asmussen sweep

Souris wins the $50,000 American Beauty Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Roman Chapa completed a sweep of the opening weekend stakes at Oaklawn Park on Saturday when Souris drew clear by 3 3/4 lengths to win the $50,000 American Beauty Stakes.

Asmussen and Chapa also teamed together on Friday to win the $50,000 Dixieland Stakes with Razor on opening day.

Maybe Jack, 12, dies at Gulf

The 12-year-old , one of the most popular horses to race at Gulfstream Park over the last several years, died of an apparent heart attack following Saturday's first race at Gulfstream. Maybe Jack was owned by his trainer, Edwin Broome.

Shadow Cast gets up in time

Shadow Cast (5), Robby Albarado up, wins the $60,000 Truly Bound Handicap Saturday at Fair Grounds Race Course. The win was Shadow Cast's third stakes victory at Fair Grounds.

Shadow Cast, under Robby Albarado, wore down Family Business on Saturday to win the $60,000 Truly Bound Handicap at Fair Grounds.

Albarado waited patiently with Shadow Cast toward the back of the six-horse field in the early stages of the 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares.

Jockey Tracy Hebert sent Miss Confusion out to the lead, and was pressed by favored Storm's Darling. The top two ran the quarter in 23.72 seconds and the half in 47.27 with the others content to sail along behind.

Electric Light turns on the power

It took Winston Thompson some time to get Electric Light in the clear in Saturday's Pasco Stakes, but once the rider swung the colt to the outside, it was all over but the shouting. Electric Light blew by the leaders in the stretch and went on to a 6 3/4-length victory in the seven-furlong stakes for 3-year-olds before a crowd of 6,735 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Captain Lindsay rallied along the outside late to gain the place by a half-length, with Dazzling Dr. Cevin third, three-quarters of a length to the good of fourth-place finisher Oak Forest.

Baze ties Shoemaker

ALBANY, Calif. - Russell Baze moved into a tie with Bill Shoemaker for second on the all-time victory list with 8,833 wins, riding El Prado Boy ($3.80) to victory in the fifth race at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

Baze, who recorded three victories Friday, won with his first three mounts Saturday to tie Shoemaker, whose first victory game at Golden Gate Fields aboard Shafter V on April 19, 1949.
