Forestier a favorite with flaws

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - What do you call a filly who blew three clear leads in 2004 and who was outgamed at 3-5 in her only start this year?

Her name is Forestier, and you call her the probable favorite for Thursday's eighth race feature at Aqueduct.

The six-furlong allowance is for older fillies and mares that have not won twice "other than," and the Todd Pletcher-trained Forestier looks like a slight choice over Lasik in a field of six.

drew the rail, and gets her sixth different jockey: Richard Migliore, the top percentage rider at the meet.

Rocky River sticks to sprints

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Not all of the good 3-year-olds on the Oaklawn Park backstretch are pointing for two-turn stakes. Rocky River, a stakes winner last year at Arlington Park, will make his seasonal debut Saturday in the $50,000 Mountain Valley at Oaklawn.

The six-furlong race for 3-year-olds is also expected to draw stakes winners Razor and Smoke Smoke Smoke, as well as the promising Sir Laff Alot.

Funny Flyer's encore to smash debut

SAN MATEO, Calif. - While Thursday's Bay Meadows feature pits win machine Smoke Till Dawn against the up-and-coming Smoocher in the third race, the most interesting race on the card is the second.

The race is a six-furlong allowance for 3-year-olds, and it marks the second start for Funny Flyer, who made a big impression in his debut.

Lost in the Fog, who earned a 103 Beyer in his debut, set the gold standard locally. Stellar Magic, coming off a win in the San Mateo Mile and eyeing the El Camino Real Derby, started his career with a 90.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Todd Pletcher worked his two Kentucky Derby hopefuls, Bandini and Proud Accolade, within minutes of one another at Palm Meadows on Sunday morning. And though both 3-year-olds have the same goal, their latest workouts were a complete contrast in style.

Tara's Touch vs. tough crew

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Niall O'Callaghan was hoping to run his South African-bred mare Tara's Touch in last weekend's $100,000 Endeavour Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, but she did not draw in off the also-eligible list.

The good news is that O'Callaghan found another spot for his mare on Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. The bad news is the race is equally as tough for less than half the purse. Still, Tara's Touch could be the right one in a contentious $46,000 allowance feature scheduled for 1 1/16 miles over the Gulfstream turf.

Saint Liam tries to buck history

ARCADIA, Calif. - Saint Liam, the winner of the Grade 1 Donn Handicap at Gulfstream Park last month, has been assigned top weight of 122 pounds for Saturday's $1 million Santa Anita Handicap and will try to become the first invader since Broad Brush in 1987 to win Santa Anita's signature race.

Saint Liam, based in Florida and trained by Richard Dutrow Jr., is scheduled to arrive at Santa Anita on Thursday. He will bring a growing reputation as a top handicap horse, a status emphasized by his Donn Handicap score.

Flores sidelined for six weeks

Wilko, galloping at Hollywood Park on Saturday, worked five furlongs in 59.60 seconds Sunday.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - David Flores, who suffered a dislocated elbow in a three-horse spill on Saturday, will miss approximately six weeks and will not travel to Japan for a two-month riding engagement next month.

The injury will prevent Flores from riding two top mounts on Saturday - Lundy's Liability in the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap and Singletary in the $300,000 Frank Kilroe Mile.

Alex Solis has been named to ride Singletary in the Grade 1 Kilroe Mile, run on turf.

Polyfirst back off striking win

ARCADIA, Calif. - Polyfirst began her American career with an impressive win in an allowance race on Santa Anita's hillside turf course on Jan. 22.

If can do the same against a tougher field in Wednesday's fifth race, she could earn a trip to the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Handicap on April 10.

Trainer Richard Mandella said it was too soon to talk about the Las Cienegas, but he did not hesitate to praise Polyfirst for her debut win.

"I like the way she ran down the hill the other day," Mandella said. "I'd like to see her do that again."

Hill a bright light in the big city

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Unlike many high school seniors who have no idea what the future holds, jockey Channing Hill knew his destiny long before he had the diploma in hand.

Hill graduated in Columbus, Neb., on Dec. 21 and immediately started packing the car. After three days on the road, the 17-year-old Hill arrived in New York and headed to Aqueduct.

After a slow start, Hill has started to make his mark at the Big A.
