Valenzuela will miss rest of meet

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Pat Valenzuela is out for the rest of the Hollywood Park spring-summer meet. The leading jockey in Southern California, Valenzuela suffered a concussion and injured his right knee Sunday in a starting gate accident.

According to Valenzuela's agent, Ron Ebanks, the rider was still in the intensive care unit Tuesday at Centinela Hospital. Ebanks said Valenzuela was conscious and is expected to recover from the concussion that resulted when he struck the right side of his head after he fell off Mango Escapade at the start of the eighth race Sunday.

Baker, McAleney hit triple

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Reade Baker and jockey Jim McAleney won the 2002 and 2003 runnings of the Fury Stakes, with Gonetofarr and Elusive Thought, and finished second with Silver Bird last year. Baker and McAleney teamed to win another on Sunday at Woodbine with River Nore, who made a successful stakes debut in the seven-furlong race.

River Nore ran fifth in her five-furlong debut here last September but improved dramatically when she returned to action almost three months later, winning a seven-furlong Ontario-sired maiden special by 12 1/2 lengths.

Tampa Bay numbers up again

Tampa Bay Downs closed its 94-day race meet on Sunday with record handle and purse numbers, the third straight year that the track has established betting records, according to figures released by the track Monday.

Average daily all-sources betting on Tampa's cards during the meet was $3,410,092, an 8 percent gain over last year's 93-day meet. Purse distribution - which can be a more accurate indicator of revenue growth than handle - averaged $144,967 a day, up 7 percent from last year. Total purses of $13,626,909 were up 8 percent during the meet.

Pick 6 carryovers coast to coast

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The second-largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history left a nice little parting gift for the everyday horseplayer at Churchill Downs. Consisting primarily of winning longshots, most notably Derby winner Giacomo, the pick six went unhit Saturday, leaving a carryover pool of $471,588 into Wednesday.

Hollywood: $143,270 feeds pot

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Wednesday is truly carryover day for pick six bettors across the nation.

In addition to the $471,588 carryover at Churchill Downs from Saturday's Kentucky Derby program there is a carryover of $143,270 at Hollywood Park and $42,387 at Belmont.

The Hollywood Park pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that also marks the launch of 10-cent superfectas in California.

Belmont: Emtyazat fresh, main speed

ELMONT, N.Y. - Favorites went a dismal 8 for 45 during the opening week of the Belmont spring meet, so handicappers may be reluctant to jump on a filly who finished fourth as the 3-5 choice in her last start.

But looks finally to be justifying her $850,000 purchase price and looms the main speed in Wednesday's $48,000 second-level allowance feature for 3-year-olds and up. There is a pick-six carryover of $42,387 entering the card.

Short meet long on stakes races

Lost in the Fog, undefeated, may not have many rivals in the Golden Bear.

ALBANY, Calif. - Golden Gate Fields opens a 29-day meeting Wednesday that is heavy with stakes racing. Eleven stakes worth a total of $965,000 will be offered, including six with a purse of at least $100,000.

Golden Gate Fields offered only 10 stakes at its 59-day November-January meet, and only two had six-figure purses. Two stakes were canceled. The total value of the stakes for the fall-winter meet was $730,225.

'Golden' victory for Simard

CALGARY, Alberta - The spotlight was on 3-year-olds here last weekend and Golden Hunt was first to strike in Saturday's $50,000 President's Handicap at Stampede Park.

Golden Hunt, a Florida-bred gelding by Gold Alert, made the lead from post 7 under Real Simard and never looked back. He set rapid fractions of 22 seconds and 44.80 and held off Blackjack Willy by a length, completing the six furlongs in 1:10.40.

On cloud nine, Shirreffs gets back to work

Hollywood Story had a rough time but still won Sunday's Hawthorne.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - At 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, a little more than 14 hours after Giacomo had won the , his trainer, John Shirreffs, was back at Hollywood Park, overseeing his 45-horse stable.

Courtesy of a private flight with owners Jerry and Ann Moss on Saturday night, Shirreffs was back at his Pasadena home before midnight on Derby Day, reliving a remarkable day before a brief night of sleep.

"It was a long day and a really big day," said Shirreffs, 59. "I was like a little kid. You want to jump into bed and dream about it."
