Lincoln: Lukfata Louis formidable

Lukfata Louis, Fonner Park's champion sprinter and horse of the year, will carry high weight of 123 pounds when he heads a strong cast in the $12,500 Speed Handicap at Nebraska State Fair Park in Lincoln.

Lukfata Louis, trained by Temple Rushton, won the Grasmick and Budweiser-Tondi handicaps at Fonner this spring as well as a sprint allowance, and should be well-backed in his comeback off a dismal showing in the 1 1/16-mile Bosselman-Gus Fonner Stakes. Lukfata Louis will have his regular rider, Don Frazier.

Wholelottabourbon goes long

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wholelottabourbon, Canada's reigning champion 2-year-old, will try to stretch his blazing speed out around two turns in Saturday's $165,900 Marine Stakes for 3-year-olds at Woodbine.

Wholelottabourbon, a winner of 5 of 6 starts, had a sensational season debut over a sloppy track in the six-furlong Woodstock Stakes, during which he shrugged off two challenges on the front end and won by a half-length.

'Blurr' wins with repeat of her last

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - What a Blurr figures to be a strong favorite over eight other 3-year-old fillies in the feature race at Hastings Saturday, a $50,000 optional claimer. Mandi Tambi and the Robbie Anderson-trained entry of Real Vain and Fuchsia Gold will have their supporters in the 6 1/2-furlong race, but if What a Blurr comes close to repeating her impressive performance in her initial start of the year, they aren't going to beat her.

Rindanica has several hurdles

CALGARY, Alberta - Rindanica drew the outside post in Saturday's $50,000 Teeworth Plate and will have to deal with Hastings invader Blowin in the Wind and the speed of Stampede Park Sprint Championship winner Chief Mtn in the one-mile handicap.

Leading rider Quincy Welch stays aboard Rindanica, who closed resolutely in the six-furlong Sprint Championship only to fall three-quarters of a length short of Chief Mtn while going the best at the wire. Rindanica came into the race without benefit of a start this year and will appreciate the added two furlongs in Saturday's feature.

Strong cast packs Special punch

BALTIMORE - The handicap division appears so deep that even without the top four older horses in training, Friday's $500,000 has come up an outstanding race.

Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, heads the field, but he faces a number of emerging stars that could challenge the likes of Ghostzapper, Roses in May, Saint Liam, and Rock Hard Ten later in the year.

Change in tactics may benefit Runway Model

BALTIMORE - Partly because the Kentucky Oaks and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes are no longer linked in what was formerly known as the triple crown for fillies, there are few compelling reasons for a horse to compete in both races. After all, like the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, they are spaced just two weeks apart.

But trainer Bernie Flint said he believes Runway Model has the constitution to bounce back from a disappointing sixth-place finish in the May 6 Oaks and successfully fulfill her role as the horse to beat in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes on Friday at Pimlico.

Ashado a favorite worth trying to beat

Horsephotos
Ashado, working out at Churchill Downs on May 5, enters Friday's Pimlico Breeders' Cup Distaff off a fifth-place finish in last month's Apple Blossom, her only start this year.

BALTIMORE - Ashado will be heavily favored in the Grade 3, $150,000 Pimlico Breeders' Cup Distaff on Friday, but there are questions surrounding her that might embolden players to take a shot at beating her.

On her best day, such as in last fall's Breeders' Cup Distaff, Ashado is clearly superior to her rivals in Friday's race. But she disappointed in her only start this year, then was pulled two weeks ago from a scheduled race at Churchill Downs in part because of a poor work that week.

Kat Kool looks ready this time

CALGARY, Alberta - The stakes winners Kat Kool, Fly Esteem, and Beau Brass were nominated to Saturday's one-mile Teeworth Plate, but instead they will run Friday in the eighth race at Stampede Park, a six-furlong allowance sprint.

Kat Kool, a top 3-year-old from last year, ran evenly to finish fifth in the Stampede Park Sprint Championship in his 2005 debut and will be favored in Friday's $21,800 allowance. Kat Kool has trained in fine fashion all spring for trainer Red Smith and drew the rail with leading rider Quincy Welch taking over.
