Indian Ocean key player in $150K carryover

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Whether can successfully stretch out to 1 1/16 miles is only a subplot on Wednesday's eight-race program at Hollywood Park, which features a pick six carryover of $150,067.

Indian Ocean beat maidens by four lengths over 6 1/2 furlongs here April 30, a performance that led trainer Jay Robbins to consider running him in the $150,000 Laz Barrera Stakes at seven furlongs last Saturday. Robbins, however, has opted for a $51,000 allowance/optional claimer in Wednesday's fifth race, which is the third leg of the pick six.

Sinus trouble can't stop Solis from winning

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - After jockey Alex Solis equaled a career-best five winners in a day on Saturday, he admitted that he would have preferred being home in bed.

Solis was suffering through sinus problems that made him feel "terrible and like I'm in space," he said. He was so sick that he stayed home on Sunday morning, passing his Sunday ritual of working horses on turf.

When Solis returned to riding on Sunday afternoon, he showed no effects of the illness, winning the first race on Well Done My Love.

"Maybe I should get sick more often," he said.

A year after record, Savorthetime returns

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - She's baaack!

Savorthetime, who ripped through six furlongs in a track-record 1:07.82 the last time she was seen at Lone Star Park, is due in later this week to defend her title in the $100,000 Valid Expectations.

The race is one of six stakes on Monday's Lone Star Million Day program. Total purses for the stakes are $1 million, making the card the richest of the meet.

Bonfante, Flying Supercon in Maddy matchup

ALBANY, Calif. - Golden Gate Fields will hold three stakes over the Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, there's the $75,000 Ken Maddy Sprint for California-breds at six furlongs, which could boil down to a matchup between Bonfante, a troubled third in a May 15 prep, and Flying Supercon, second by a nose in the Phoenix Gold Cup at Turf Paradise and also second there as the odds-on choice in the Howard Memorial in his last start.

Two from Fair Grounds bear watching

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Fair Grounds shippers Elle Runaway and Oblivious should both be competitive in Wednesday's Woodbine feature, a $62,500 optional claimer for fillies and mares at a mile on the grass.

After launching her career here last August, Elle Runaway graduated in her fifth start. She won over a sloppy track at the Fair Grounds in December. She reappeared at Fair Grounds Feb. 24, in a $50,000 optional claimer, finishing second to next-out winner Thunderdoll.

Super in Selene, Gold Strike on track for Oaks

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Gold Strike thrust herself squarely into the picture for the June 12 Labatt Woodbine Oaks with an impressive victory here in last Sunday's Grade 3 Selene.

Making her second local appearance for trainer Reade Baker, Gold Strike ran away from the favored Lemon Maid through the final furlong of the 1 1/16-mile Selene and won by 5 3/4 lengths under jockey Jim McAleney. Gold Strike earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96 and avenged a loss to Lemon Maid in her previous start, the six-furlong Star Shoot here April 24.

Sabertooth smashes world record

AUBURN, Wash. - Sabertooth smashed the world record for 6 1/2 furlongs with a dazzling display of speed in Sunday's $40,000 at Emerald Downs.

Going directly to the front under rider Nate Chaves, Sabertooth cut fractions of 21.80, 43.20, and 1:06.40 en route to a 3 3/4 length victory over Best On Tap in 1:13 flat.

The previous world record for 6 1/2 furlongs of 1:13.24 was set by Lucky Forever at Hollywood Park on May 20, 1995. Best On Tap held Emerald's previous record of 1:13.60, which he set on May 31 of last year.

Uncle Kurt remains unbeaten

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Wild Uncle Kurt remained unbeaten through two starts after Sunday's $94,725 for 2-year-olds at Hollywood Park.

But unlike in his career debut on May 1 when he lead throughout, Wild Uncle Kurt ran down pacesetter The Missile Came in the Proctor, finishing five furlongs in 58.85 seconds. The time was slower than a five-furlong race for state-bred maidens earlier in the day, won by Case Study in 58.46 seconds.

Yerevan Star best in Camilla Urso Stakes

ALBANY, Calif. - Yerevan Star ($4.80) sat outside a pair of runners through a hot early pace duel and pulled away in the lane as she easily captured the $58,712 Camilla Urso Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday.

"That's what we've been waiting for her to do, relax early," winning trainer Gloria Haley said of Yerevan Star's trip.

Princess Lianna and Storminbayoubabe, both trained by Steve Specht, alternated on the lead through the opening half-mile in the six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.

Favored Pickle wins Yerba Buena

ALBANY, Calif. - Favored Pickle ($4.80), sat back early and had plenty left when she shifted out for room in the lane as she won her second straight Grade 3 event, beating Marla Bay by one-half length to capture the $80,625 Yerba Buena Breeders' Cup Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

The 4-year-old British-bred filly improved her American record to three wins in four starts with the victory.
