Lion Tamer tackles Lone Star 'Cap

Lion Tamer will make a rare start around two turns on Monday.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Lion Tamer has a date with two turns in Texas.

The winner of last fall's Grade 1 Cigar Mile, Lion Tamer will run Monday in the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap, trainer Todd Pletcher said Tuesday.

Jerry Bailey has the mount on Lion Tamer, who will be the 120-pound starting highweight in the 1 1/16-mile race, which anchors the annual Lone Star Million Day program of stakes.

Pletcher said he also plans to ship in Dubleo for the $200,000 Pin Oak Stud USA for 3-year-olds on turf. Bailey will also ride Dubleo.

Rodeo's Castle to go in Kings Court

Rodeo's Castle is staying home.

After toying with the idea of running one of the region's quickest horses next month at Belmont Park, owner Byron House 3rd and trainer Beverly Fowler decided on Tuesday that Rodeo's Castle will make his next start Sunday at his home track of Louisiana Downs. He is being pointed for the $50,000 Kings Court.

NYRA fires 59 clerks after apparent strike

ELMONT, N.Y. - The New York Racing Association fired 59 mutuel clerks and suspended an additional 30 as the result of an apparent job action that took place Saturday at Belmont Park.

The 89 clerks called in sick on Saturday, leaving Belmont short-staffed on a day when the track hosted a live racing program and took the simulcast of the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico. A crowd of 9,221 was on hand, larger than a normal Saturday. NYRA's ontrack handle dropped only slightly, from $2,951,771 to $2,801,721.

Some herpes horses training

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Horses in two of the three Churchill Downs barns placed under quarantine because of confirmed cases of equine herpes virus had resumed training apart from the general horse population by Monday.

Horses stabled at Churchill in Barn 39, those trained by Paul McGee, Bill Cesare, and Ron Ellis, were allowed to return to training late Saturday after clearing blood tests, and Monday morning trainer Steve Asmussen's horses stabled in Barn 38 joined them.

Honolua Storm in $75 upset

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Outsider Honolua Storm ($75) held three rivals at bay through the stretch in a front-running victory in the Grade 3, $166,050 Eclipse Handicap at Woodbine on Monday.

Honolua Storm set slow fractions of 24.06 seconds, 47.90, and 1:12.40 on an uncontested lead in the 1 1/16-mile event. Cuba, Judiths Wild Rush, and A Bit O'Gold all loomed into contention inside the quarter pole, but Honolua Storm held his ground and prevailed by a neck in a quick 1:43.77.

Turf Paradise handle up

Total handle on Turf Paradise races rose 4 percent during the track's 2004-2005 meet, even though the track raced seven fewer days than during the 2003-2004 meeting, according to figures released by the track.

Total handle on the live races for the 160-day Turf Paradise meet, which ran from Oct. 1, 2004 through Sunday, came to about $312 million, compared with about $300 million during the previous meeting, which ran for 167 days. The average daily handle for the meet was $1.95 million, up 8.3 percent from $1.8 million from the previous meet.

Ghostzapper on deck

ELMONT, N.Y. - Practice is over, it's now time to play.

Defending Horse of the Year Ghostzapper completed his preparation for his 2005 debut in next Monday's Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap by working six furlongs in 1:13.24 Monday morning over Belmont Park's main track. The $750,000 Met Mile will be Ghostzapper's first start since he won the Breeders' Cup Classic last Oct. 30, capping an undefeated (4-for-4) season.

Woodard chases win-streak mark

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Joe Woodard, in the midst of a seven-race win streak at Churchill Downs, can break the track's record for consecutive victories by a trainer when he starts a pair of horses at Churchill Wednesday.

Woodard has entered Slider, a winner of more than a half-million dollars, in a $62,500 claiming contest in race 2, and Bahama Beau, a recent winner at River Downs, in the fifth race, a $10,000 nonwinners-of-three claiming race. Both horses will be among the favorites.

Teeworth to Hastings invader

CALGARY, Alberta - Blowin in the Wind captured the $50,000 Teeworth Plate here on Saturday under a heady ride from Robert Skelly, who found running room along the rail and took Blowin in the Wind through the opening to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Rindanica was eight lengths clear in second after taking the lead a furlong out. Blowin in the Wind, a Hastings invader owned and trained by Dave Forster, ran the mile in 1:36.20.

Rain would help Ward filly's cause

CHICAGO - If a trainer's barn-office television isn't tuned into ESPN, it's definitely tuned into The Weather Channel. With training regimens and entries to handle, almost all of a horseman's worklife has weather at its center. Usually, people are trying to dodge the rain. Trainer John Ward hopes to coax some from the skies over Arlington Park.
