Crafty Shaw should relish mile trip

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The first time Crafty Shaw raced one mile on dirt - and this dates back more than four years - he won by almost 10 lengths. He also won his third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth tries going a flat mile. That last one came in the Hanshin Handicap last summer at Arlington Park, and Crafty Shaw, back for still another season at age 7, will try to repeat in the Hanshin here Saturday.

Dance Away Capote returns

Unable to make her scheduled start in the Kentucky Oaks three weeks ago because of a fever, Dance Away Capote is healthy and ready to run in Saturday's $100,000 Go for Wand Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Delaware Park.

"Dance Away Capote is doing super," said trainer H. Graham Motion. "She worked on Sunday at Fair Hill in 1:13 breezing going six furlongs, so she should be ready. Knock on wood, everything is going in the right direction, and I know she handles the Delaware track, which is always a positive."

Lord Robyn in shaky spot

MIAMI - Will a return to his favorite course be enough to help Lord Robyn snap a three-race losing streak in Saturday's $75,000 Simply Majestic Handicap at Calder?

Chances are the betting public will think so and establish Lord Robyn, who is perfect in three starts over the Calder turf, as the favorite against 10 other 3-year-olds in the 1 1/16-mile Simply Majestic. With plenty of speed in the field, though, and some questions about Lord Robyn's form, he could be vulnerable in his first local appearance since he dominated the Tropical Park Derby here on New Year's Day.

Agrivating General in rare sprint

Agrivating General has not raced around one turn since January 2003, but that will change Saturday when he starts as one of the favorites in the $50,000 Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial at Lone Star Park. The six-furlong race is restricted to Texas-breds, and it drew one of the state's best sprinters in Charming Socialite.

Victory Lap a filly on the rise

The owners group Turf Express has shifted its focus over the last year, transforming the operation from a large, claim-driven barn to one that races a midsize stable of quality fillies. One of its recent success stories is Injustice, who captured the Grade 3, $175,000 Azeri Breeders' Cup at Oaklawn Park in March, one start after being purchased privately.

Saturday, it appears Turf Express could have another stakes winner. Victory Lap will be favored to make it four wins in a row when she makes her stakes debut in the $50,000 Chapel Belle at Louisiana Downs.

Meet opens with smoother surface, more offtrack outlets

The temperatures are heading north and so is the racing. The annual pilgrimage of Arizona horsemen and horseplayers happens on Saturday, as the action moves from the recently concluded Turf Paradise meet to the cooler high-mountain area (elevation about 5,000 feet) of Yavapai Downs in Prescott Valley.

The facility is opening for its fifth season, having been inaugurated in 2001. Yavapai, a mile oval, is a state-of-the-art facility that supplanted old Prescott Downs as the main summer stop for racing in Arizona.

Quick turnarounds in Maddy

ALBANY, Calif. - Thirteen days ago, Jet West and Bonfante ran first and third in a May 15 allowance sprint.

On Saturday they meet again in the $75,000 Ken Maddy Sprint, a six-furlong stakes for California-breds.

Steve Specht, who trains Bonfante, the beaten favorite in the May 15 race, believes the gelding can turn the tables on Jet West.

, who had Miguel Perez aboard, drew the rail in the allowance race. On Saturday, he drew post 3. Jet West, who drew post 5 on May 15, drew the outside post, 6, here.

Forster's road trip successful despite unexpected pit stop

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer David Forster had a nice homecoming of sorts. Forster, who was born in Edmonton but spent more of his youth in Calgary, won two stakes at Stampede Park in Alberta last weekend.

Blowin in the Wind won the Teeworth Plate on Saturday and Summer Symphony scored a 2 1/2-length win in the Ken Pearson Memorial Handicap on Monday. Forster is weighing his options for both horses following their impressive performances.

Two-furlong races lose steam

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Two-furlong races, Fort Erie style, have seen better days. Because of a change in the conditions of the races, fewer horses are being entered and the races aren't filling.

The dashes have been popular with the fans. The buzz around them and the handle they have generated demonstrate that.

The quarter-mile races have created such Fort Erie heroes as Pecos Star, Storming on Merit, and Pembroke Hall.

Two-time Churchill winner tries Plate next

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - King of Jazz, who strutted his stuff at Churchill Downs on Wednesday afternoon, is scheduled to make his next start here in the June 26 Queen's Plate.

A Manitoba-bred owned by Buckram Oak Farm and trained by Carl Nafzger, King of Jazz was supplemented to the $1 million Queen's Plate at a cost of $15,000 and would be making his first local appearance in the 1 1/4-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.
