Turf debut for 'Moonshine.' Maybe.

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Trainer King Leatherbury is unsure whether Malibu Moonshine will make his turf debut in the Jersey Derby.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Malibu Moonshine could be a very busy horse.

A little more than a week after he ran eighth in the Preakness, Malibu Moonshine may be back in action in the $100,000 Jersey Derby, the Memorial Day feature at Monmouth Park.

, who won the Private Terms and Federico Tesio stakes prior to the Preakness, would be making his grass debut in the 1 1/16-mile Jersey Derby.

"I really don't consider him a turf horse," said trainer King Leatherbury. "We decided to take a look at the race and then we'll make up our minds."

Twilight Road obvious target this time

MIAMI - Twilight Road surprised just about everyone, including his trainer, David Fawkes, when he registered an easy victory in the 2004 Memorial Day Handicap at Calder. He will fool nobody Monday, though, if he successfully defends that title against seven rivals in the Grade 3, $100,000 holiday fixture.

rallied from mid-pack, then drew off with authority through the stretch to post a 5 1/4-length triumph in last year's 1 1/16-mile Memorial Day Handicap. The victory was his first around two turns.

Thrilling Victory on a roll

ALBANY, Calif. - Just how good is Thrilling Victory?

The 3-year-old filly, who began her career less than four months ago in a $16,000 maiden claimer, has won 4 of 5 career starts.

She's won sprinting. She's won routing. She's won on the dirt. She's won on the turf. She won a stakes, the Bay Meadows Oaks, in her last start.

will be bidding for her fourth straight victory Monday as she tackles seven other 3-year-old fillies in the $100,000 Golden Poppy Breeders' Cup at one mile on the turf.

Several angles tab Waupaca in Barksdale

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Waupaca and Crowned King, each of whom ended a prolonged drought by winning his most recent start, should vie for favoritism in Monday's Barksdale Handicap. The $50,000 turf race drew a full field of 12.

The victor in this race a year ago, had not won since then until he took the $40,000 Connecting Terms Stakes at Lone Star on May 7. Trainer Donnie Von Hemel added blinkers to Waupaca's equipment that day, and the 5-year-old son of Forest Wildcat responded with a sharp two-length score, paying $14.20.

Factors favor Gulch Approval

ELMONT, N.Y. - Old Forester beat Gulch Approval by 1 1/4 lengths and set a Gulfstream Park course record when they met in the Canadian Turf Handicap two months ago.

When the two meet again in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Jaipur Handicap at Belmont Park, there are a few reasons to believe Gulch Approval could turn the tables. Old Forester must carry high weight of 124 pounds in the Jaipur, a 10-pound increase from the Canadian. He will spot four pounds to Gulch Approval.

Speed vs. consistency in stakes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A wickedly fast speedball who has never run two alike, and a consistent stakes winner who has never raced on turf are the key starters Sunday in the $75,000 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park.

is one of the fastest fillies in California, and Grade 3 winner Short Route is one of the most willing. Those two will attract much of the wagering in the Manhattan Beach, a 5 1/2-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies that drew a field of 11.

Fast and Furious in '05 debut

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Fast and Furious arrived from France last summer with the expectation that he would become a star on turf. Maybe this year he will finally prove it.

Monday, in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile at Hollywood Park, Fast and Furious makes his 4-year-old debut. It is the first start in a campaign that owner Arnold Zetcher and trainer Ron McAnally hope will lead to starts in such major races as the Arlington Million in August.

Stakes-class crew in feature

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No one could have blamed horsemen for being unable to resist the allure of the Grade 3 Louisville Handicap 24 hours later, but several did just that, making for a nice feature race Sunday at Churchill Downs.

Apparently figuring the $68,200 purse was close enough to the $100,000-added that will be up for grabs here Monday in the Louisville, the trainers of stakes-proven turf horses such as G P Fleet, Senor Swinger, Gretchen's Star, and Freefourinternet all opted for the Sunday feature, a classified allowance at 1 1/16 miles.

Belated return for favorite

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The list of nominees for Sunday's Grade 3, $164,850 Connaught Cup Stakes at Woodbine was an impressive one, including reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Soaring Free and 2004 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now.

When the entries were drawn for the race, however, none of the big guns showed up, leaving the consistent Le Cinquieme Essai as the likely favorite in the 1 1/16-mile grass event.
