Procreate one of the main monsters

In October 2002, Procreate ran for a $2,500 claiming tag at Charles Town. And he didn't even win that race.

Flash forward to Memorial Day 2005 and , now age 7 and in a different barn, could be the horse to beat in the $100,000 Turf Monster Handicap at Philadelphia Park.

The five-furlong turf sprint drew a field of 12 older horses, but because several ran in Saturday's Ben Cohen at Pimlico, no more than eight runners are expected to actually compete in the Turf Monster.

Travelator looks good, but history says use caution

Bettors who got burned when they thought Travelator was a sure thing shipping into Finger Lakes for a statebred stakes a year ago will probably be reluctant to take a short price on her again on Memorial Day.

Although she towers over her competition based on a solid third in a Grade 2 stakes two starts ago, Travelator could be vulnerable again when she returns to Finger Lakes for Monday's Susan B. Anthony Stakes.

Mountaineer: Reed seeks a sweep

Kentucky-based trainer Eric Reed has a good shot to sweep both turf stakes on Mountaineer's holiday program.

Reed has the 4-year-old filly Beau Watch, a romping winner of a handicap at Indiana Downs two weeks ago, for the Decoration Day Handicap (race 3). He also trains Doc D, a 6-year-old gelding who returned from a two-month layoff to run second in a money allowance at Keeneland, geared up for the Memorial Day Handicap (race 4).

Both stakes will be contested at one mile and each is worth $75,000.

Umpateedle vs. Cobra Lady

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Umpateedle took the 2004 Primonetta Stakes under Ramon Dominguez.

Umpateedle and Cobra Lady, two extremely consistent older female sprinters, meet for the first time in Tuesday night's $75,000 Ohio Valley Handicap at Mountaineer Race Track.

The six-furlong feature, which goes as race 9 on a 10-race program, drew a field of seven fillies and mares.

The 6-year-old Umpateedle, trained by Mark Shuman for owner Michael Gill, has a career record of 13 wins in 46 starts while competing primarily in New Jersey, Delaware, and West Virginia.

'Bruce' need only handle turf

Bruce on the Loose heads a full field of 10 3-year-old Indiana-breds in Tuesday's $40,000 Governor's at 7 1/2 furlongs over the Indiana Downs turf course.

Based on his dirt form, Bruce on the Loose is strictly the one to beat, but questions abound in the Governor's because none of the runners has ever competed on the turf and only two starters have won around two turns.

'Dancer' finally gets her trip

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Valentine Dancer has won two stakes and placed in two others in four starts this year, and has not yet raced over her best distance. That will change on Monday, when the millionaire mare takes on Katdogawn in the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff at Lone Star Park.

Top Commander tough on any surface

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Top Commander has one of this year's highest Beyer Speed Figures for a sprinter on dirt, but he's a monster on turf, too, and should start as the shortest-priced favorite on the Lone Star Million Day card Monday at Lone Star Park.

Aside from the main events, the Lone Star Park Handicap and the WinStar Distaff, there are four other stakes Monday.
