Spring Season ($13.80), despite having to steady behind tiring horses in midstretch, responded to jockey Victor Molina's urging when a hole opened up and drew off to a three-length victory in the $100,000 Dr. James Penny Memorial Handicap at Philadelphia Park. My Lordship finished fifth as the 8-5 favorite.
In the $50,000 Lyman Sprint Championship for Pennsylvania-breds, Banjo Picker ($5.20) beat Nittany Express by a neck.
Pyrite Springs completed a stakes double on the Ohio Derby Day card for trainer Miguel Feliciano and his nephew, jockey Ricardo Feliciano, holding off Ready for Roses to win the $75,000 Cleveland Gold Cup by a neck. Bug Hunter rallied for third, another neck back in the field of 14 Ohio-bred 3-year-olds.
Pyrite Springs ($20) ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:53.84. Earlier in the day, the Felicianos won the Isi Newborn Memorial Stakes with Bernie Blue.
Wally's Choice prevailed by a half-length over Now Playing in the $40,000 Blair's Cove Stakes at Canterbury Park. Wally's Choice ($3.60) finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.14 over firm going. Bassant rallied for third, another 2 3/4 lengths back.
Smart N Classy, the lone New Jersey-bred in the field, got past Lentil in the final jumps to win the Grade 3, $150,000 by a nose Sunday at Monmouth Park.
Smart N Classy ($15.40) ran the 1 1/16 miles over a soft turf course in 1:46.22 before a crowd of 13,825. Spotlight was third, a neck behind Lentil.
Smart N Classy, ridden by Jose Velez Jr. for trainer John Tammaro III, earned her sixth win in 24 career starts.
Counterfeit Gold ($14.80) survived a three-wide pace duel and scored a three-quarter-length victory over Dawn of War in the $50,000 Prairie Gold Juvenile at Prairie Meadows.
Counterfeit Gold finished the five furlongs in 57.92 seconds. Dawn of War got up for second in the final stride over the filly Hello Liberty, who had dueled between horses throughout. Riders Up, the 4-5 favorite, faded to fifth after being involved in the pace duel.
Counterfeit Gold is now 2 for 2 for trainer Willie Padilla. Iram Diego rode the winner.
PLEASANTON, Calif. - Heavily favored Don Jaun Con ($3.40) made easy work of the field, winning the $53,600 by 6 1/2 lengths at the Alameda County Fair on Sunday.
The 2-year-old Cal-bred, claimed for $32,000 in his debut, popped the gate and was quickly in command through relatively restrained fractions of 21.87 and 45.70. He continued to open in the lane as he beat Momotombo in 56.31 seconds, just .11 off the stakes and track record set last year by Wind Water.
The rest of the field had various degrees of early trouble, but it is unlikely the outcome would have changed.
