Colonial: Running Tide takes to turf

Jeff Coady/Coady Photography
Running Tide wins the $60,000 Da Hoss Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday.

Running Tide ($15), a lightly raced 6-year-old with no previous turf experience, responded to the surface change by edging past pacesetter Mt. Carson to earn a 1 1/4-length victory in the $60,000 Da Hoss Stakes at Colonial Downs.

As a 3-year-old in 2002, Running Tide won two stakes, including the Grade 3 Leonard Richards at Delaware Park. But he went 0 for 3 as a 4-year-old, missed all of last year, and was outrun sprinting in his only start this season.

Louisiana: Raspberry Wine upsets

Raspberry Wine stalked heavily favored Zarba the Great, overcame a potentially disastrous bobble in midstretch, and pulled away to a three-length victory in the $50,000 Lorelei Stakes at Louisiana Downs.

Zarba the Great, who had won her last four starts, settled for second, followed by Snipper Lou. Raspberry Wine, who has won 2 of 7 starts and more than $63,000, covered 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:44.99.

Ridden by Jose Riquelme, who survived a scare after briefly losing his balance in midstretch, Raspberry Wine ($19) raced with the addition of blinkers.

All Platinum outlasts Coastal Strike

All Platinum ($18.80) outlasted Coastal Strike by a head in the $58,600 Beautiful Day, an overnight stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Delaware Park. Contrast, unbeaten in two starts at Belmont, finished third in the field of five at 1-5.

Judiths Wild Rush wins the $137,675 Bold Venture Handicap at Woodbine on Saturday.

Judiths Wild Rush ($9.50) parlayed an ideal stalking trip into a daylight score at Woodbine in the $137,675 Bold Venture Handicap.

Judiths Wild Rush tracked a trio of battling front-runners on the backstretch of the 6 1/2-furlong sprint. He made a four-wide bid on the turn and hit the front nearing the eighth pole before edging away to win by 1 1/2 lengths. The final time was 1:15.41.

After contesting fractions of 22.23 and 44.21 seconds, High Blitz got second by three-quarters of a length over Ministers Wild Cat, the even-money favorite in the seven-horse field.

Summit of Speed delayed

MIAMI - Hurricane Dennis managed to accomplish in a single night what nobody else has been able to do all year: slow down Lost in the Fog. At least for one day.

Hurricane Dennis did not score a direct hit on the Miami area, but effects from the storm prompted officials at Calder Race Course to postpone Saturday's $1.9 million Summit of Speed card until Sunday afternoon, when the outstanding 13-race program, which includes four graded stakes, was to be run in its entirety.

Clearly troubled

Big Prairie nearly won last month's Jefferson Cup despite being blocked in the stretch.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trip handicappers were likely falling all over themselves after watching Big Prairie run second in last month's Grade 3 Jefferson Cup at Churchill Downs. Blocked for about an eighth of a mile in the stretch, Big Prairie finally got clear inside the furlong marker and closed with a flourish to finish a neck behind favored Rush Bay.

Those wanting to bet Big Prairie back may do so in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Lexington Stakes at Belmont Park, though likely at less attractive odds than the 5-1 he was in the Jefferson Cup.

Bashford may offer glimpse of future star

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The curtain comes down Sunday at Churchill Downs, but not before one last hurrah. The 2-year-olds who will clash in the closing-day feature, the $150,000 Bashford Manor Stakes, are as yet undistinguished, but the stage could be set for a star to emerge.

The favorite on the Churchill morning line, Deputy G, is 4-1, an inordinately high number that reflects the depth of the 10-horse lineup.

See the Wind is Sam-Son's latest hope

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sam-Son Farm, which has won the $165,150 Ontario Damsel Stakes a record six times, will try to capture this year's renewal of the 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Woodbine with See the Wind.

After ending up third in her debut on the grass at the Fair Grounds in March, See the Wind ran two dreadful races on the main track at Keeneland, efforts that trainer Mark Frostad deemed throwouts.

Kerlan 'Cap has drawn class bunch

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The $75,000 purse for Sunday's Robert Kerlan Handicap at Hollywood Park does not do justice to the assembled field of eight turf sprinters.

This group has the sort of form worthy of a stakes worth much more prize money.

Golden Arrow, who has placed in three consecutive turf sprints, carries high weight of 120 pounds against such notable runners as Shadow of Illinois and Geronimo, who were first and second in the Grade 3 San Simeon Handicap at Santa Anita in April, and the stakes winners Billy's Echo and Stormin' Lyon.

Ladnesian battle is for second

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Bound to Be M V P stands out on Sunday in the $40,000 Ladnesian, the first stakes race for 2-year-old colts and geldings at Hastings this year. The 6 1/2-furlong Ladnesian drew seven horses, but it's hard to see any of them beating Bound to Be M V P.
