Lava Man takes Hollywood Gold Cup

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The prediction that Patrick Valenzuela issued in the paddock before he rode Lava Man in Saturday's $750,000 turned out to be prophetic.

Valenzuela told owners Steve and David Kenley and Jason Wood and trainer Doug O'Neill not to worry too much about pre-race tactics. Lava Man, Valenzuela said, could be anywhere as the race unfolded and still manage to win.

"'I can sit second. I can sit third. I can sit fourth. I could be on the lead,'" Valenzuela said in the paddock.

Then, he went out and proved it.

Acey Deucey, with Diane Nelson aboard, surges past Maddalena to win the Prioress by a half-length. The victory was Nelson's first in a Grade 1.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Diane Nelson wouldn't have been surprised if she had been replaced aboard Acey Deucey in Saturday's Grade 1 for 3-year-old fillies.

Nelson's business had declined to the point where she had just 16 mounts at this meet and 63 for the entire year. But owner Jeffrey Tucker and trainer John Morrison believe Nelson fits Acey Deucey best, and Saturday they were proven right.

The special event will benefit the Jockey School of Peru, where many spectacularly successful riders, including Edgar Prado, Jorge Chavez, Jose Valdivia Jr., and Rafael Bejarano, learned the ropes before immigrating to the United States.

Capeside Lady, under Chris DeCarlo, cruises to a five-length win in the Molly Pitcher.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Perhaps it was the shower that pelted Monmouth Park two races earlier that gave the mud-craving Capeside Lady her kind of track.

Or it could be that Capeside Lady, now 4, has matured into a solid stakes filly.

Whatever the reasons, Capeside Lady ($5) scored a dominant front-running victory in the Grade 2, $300,000 for fillies and mares on Saturday.

With Chris DeCarlo aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher, Capeside Lady shot to the front in the 1 1/16-mile race and dictated the pace.

They never looked back.
