Mutasaabeq might get another shot at main track in Mucho Macho Man

Barbara D. Livingston
Mutasaabeq's biggest win came over turf, but he will start 2021 on dirt in the Mucho Macho Man on Jan. 4 at Gulfstream.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The first major 3-year-old stakes of the new year at Gulfstream Park will be the one-mile Mucho Macho Man on Jan. 2, and it could feature a return to dirt for Grade 2 turf winner Mutasaabeq, trainer Todd Pletcher reported.

Mutasaabeq launched his career with an impressive win on the main track before finishing a distant third in the Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga, also on the main track. He then switched to grass to win the Grade 2 Bourbon at Keeneland before finishing a troubled 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

Breeze On Bye began his career with three straight victories, including the Dr. Fager and Affirmed divisions of the Florida Sire Stakes.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Breeze On By, the best of the locally based 2-year-olds here in 2020, did just that Wednesday, working an easy half-mile in 48.43 seconds here as he begins to gear up for his much-anticipated 3-year-old campaign.

Working for just the second time since finishing a very troubled second as the 1-5 favorite in the 1 1/16-mile In Reality on Sept. 26, Breeze On By finished strong, completing his final quarter in 23.21 without being urged over a racetrack that was on the cuppy side all morning.

Top juvenile stakes horses may yield to faster prospects at Santa Anita meet

Life Is Good impressed with a 90 Beyer in his debut and was the top-rated individual horse in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The trend the past couple of years with California-based preps for the Kentucky Derby has been for lightly raced, late-developing types to emerge, and that could continue this year during the Santa Anita meeting that begins Saturday.

Pixelate figures right there with a clean run in Woodchopper

Benoit Photo
Pixelate wins the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in September. Pace and traffic trouble compromised him in his two starts since.

It’s not difficult to connect the dots and see Pixelate emerge as a major player Saturday in the $75,000 Woodchopper Stakes on the Fair Grounds turf.

Pixelate got caught well behind a false pace two starts ago in the Belmont Derby and never had a chance to make up ground in a slow-early, fast-late Grade 1. Last out, Pixelate got away slowly in the $150,000 Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland, then found considerable trouble at the quarter pole before roaring home to finish fourth.

“He had a troubled trip and he wasn’t able to overcome it,” said trainer Mike Stidham.

After winning his first two Gulfstream races, Sisterson shoots for a stakes

Windracer wins her U.S. debut in August at Arlington. Trainer Jack Sisterson believes she is better than her past performances indicate.

When in Florida, trainer Jack Sisterson does not necessarily specialize in winning the last race of a weekend card. It only appears that way.

Sisterson, campaigning regularly at Gulfstream Park for the first time in his solo career, won the Saturday finale with Kentucky Pharoah ($12.60) and the Sunday finale with Mr. Tip ($5.40) for his first-ever Gulf triumphs.

“I understand the Pegasus is going to be the last race of the day, too,” Sisterson said with a laugh, referring to True Timber being a prime candidate for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 23.

Charge It All possible for Gasparilla Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Dayoutoftheoffice won the Grade 1 Frizette and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies for trainer Tim Hamm.

A third 2-year-old filly in the Tim Hamm barn will get a chance to become a stakes winner at 3 after Charge It All pulled a mild upset Sunday in an allowance race at Tampa Bay Downs.

Hamm said Charge It All could go next in the Jan. 16 Gasparilla at the Oldsmar, Fla., oval after rallying for a 1 1/2-length victory in 1:18.30 going 6 1/2 furlongs. She paid $13.40 when coming off a nose victory in a $50,000 maiden-claiming race at Gulfstream West.
