CHICAGO - The old Chicago claiming trainer is headed for the Breeders' Cup Classic.
AUBURN, Wash. - Mr. Makah came from 20 lengths back under Leslie Mawing to run down the pacesetters at the top of the lane, then dug in to stave off the late move of entrymate Best Game In Town to prevail by a neck in Sunday's $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic at Emerald Downs.
Mr. Makah, a 5-year-old trained by Bonnie Jenne, got the 1 1-16 miles in 1:42.40 over a sloppy track and paid $5.00 to win as the second choice in a compact field of five.
BOSSIER CITY, La. - In a stunning upset, Comalagold, a 25-1 shot, won a photo over 2-5 favorite Nicole's Dream in the $40,000 Majorette Handicap at Louisiana Downs on Sunday.
Nicole's Dream dueled with Runs Naked through fractions of 21.13 seconds for the opening quarter, and 43.38 for the half-mile mark. Comalagold ($53.40) rallied into the hot pace and was up for a nose win over Nicole's Dream, who finished a length and a quarter clear of third-place finisher Runs Naked.
Nicole's Dream is an excellent gate horse, but ended up breaking fourth on Sunday.
ARCADIA, Calif. - After three tough losses in major stakes in the summer, Fourty Niners Son finally won a major race in Sunday's $250,000 at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.
Whether the victory leads to a start in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Belmont Park on Oct. 29 depends on a future discussion between owner Tom Baxter and trainer Neil Drysdale.
At the least, Fourty Niners Son put together what Drysdale described as "a professional race" in the Grade 1 Hirsch.
Northern Scene made a splash in his first start in his native Texas on Saturday night, when he shattered a course record at Retama Park while winning the feature on the richest card of the meet, the $100,000 Texas Hall of Fame Stakes. The mile and a sixteenth turf race was one of six retricted stakes worth $470,000. The card is a fixture at Retama, and it is designed to complement inductions into the track's Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Tyler Baze failed a breathalyzer test on Saturday night at Hoosier Park and has been suspended for seven days, according to Gary Wilfert, a steward at Hoosier Park.
Baze, 22, was at Hoosier Park to ride Southern Africa in the Indiana Derby. He was taken off that mount. Stewards at Santa Anita on Sunday said Baze would be removed from his mounts at Santa Anita, including Leprechaun Kid in the Grade 1 Clement Hirsch Turf Championship.
"With reciprocity, we honor that," said George Slender, a steward at Santa Anita. "Tyler will be off today."
ELMONT, N.Y. - He's Got Grit used his brilliant speed to open up a clear early lead then opened up again in upper stretch en route to a 3 1/2-length victory over Dr. Pleasure in Sunday's $77,150 Cowdin Stakes at Belmont Park.
The race was marred by the fatal breakdown of Winning Minister about 30 yards from the wire. He suffered a fractured sesamoid in his left foreleg and had to be euthanized.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - A Bit O Gold ($5.20) overtook even-money favorite Revved Up in deep stretch to capture the $329,300 Sky Classic Handicap at Woodbine Sunday.
Jockey Jono Jones had A Bit O'Gold saving ground in a stalking position on the backstretch of the mile and three-eighth turf event, as Demeteor set slow fractions, while being pressed by Revved Up and Colorful Judgement.
Revved Up took control at the top of the stretch, but A Bit O'Gold wore him down after angling wide on the far turn, and prevailed by a neck. The final time was 2:17.17 seconds.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Graham Motion will now be represented in all three grass races on Breeders' Cup Day.
Motion, who is bringing defending Breeders' Cup Turf winner Better Talk Now and Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf runner-up Film Maker back for those races, will now saddle Funfair in the BC Mile here on Oct. 29.
