Rocky Gulch shooting for $1M

Rocky Gulch, who won his 11th stakes race Sunday in the $147,200 New Mexico Cup Classic at Zia Park, is being pointed for the $125,000 Johnie L. Jamison at Sunland Park on Dec. 11, said his owner and breeder, Larry Teague.

The 6 1/2-furlong Jamison is restricted to horses bred in New Mexico. Rocky Gulch, trained by Terry Walker, is one of the state's marquee horses, with earnings of $772,358. "Our goal is to be the first New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred to earn a million dollars," said Teague. "We're getting pretty close. We've got a good shot."

Twisted Wit drops to look for a victory

Michael Burns Photo Ltd.
Twisted Wit, winning the Achievement in summer 2004, has not won a race this year and hasn't run since July.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Twisted Wit, a double stakes winner in each of his first two campaigns, has failed to win any race in five starts this year, all at Woodbine.

That may well change on Friday, however, as Twisted Wit appears to have found a suitable spot in the $79,900 allowance feature, a six-furlong race for nonwinners of a race other than maiden or claiming in 2005.

Sweet Talker's status hinges on sale

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - If you asked racing fans to guess the next time Churchill Downs will run a stakes race on the dirt, most of them probably would be surprised to know that the correct answer is: not until Thanksgiving Day.

The next four stakes at Churchill all will be run on turf, as will, for good measure, the next three races in the overnight stakes program. The first of those grass races comes this weekend, when the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere and the Pent Up Kiss are run Saturday, and the Commonwealth Turf is run Sunday.

'Threesixty' logical option to the favorite

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - If the good allowance sprinter Trail Mix is such a dominant presence Thursday in the seventh-race feature at Hollywood Park, why would anyone bother to bet the race?

The twofold answer is Trail Mix's odds will be depressingly low in the first-condition allowance, and lightly raced Threesixtysecurity offers an appealing alternative. enter the seven-furlong race as the top contenders in the richest race on the Thursday card.

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
As a prep for the Japan Cup, King's Drama might run in the Red Smith.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - In preparing King's Drama for the Japan Cup, run Nov. 27, trainer Bobby Frankel was going to take the conventional approach by working him this week and next.

That was until someone asked him if he was considering running King's Drama in Saturday's Grade 2, $150,000 Red Smith Handicap at Aqueduct. The more he thought about it, the more Frankel thought it was a good idea. Thus, King's Drama is now likely to run in Saturday's Red Smith, scheduled for 1 3/8 miles on turf.
