Singletary victorious in Oak Tree Mile

ARCADIA, Calif. - Scoring one of his stylish victories, Singletary rallied from last in the final quarter-mile to win Saturday's $249,000 at Santa Anita.

The win left trainer Don Chatlos "relieved" and ready to take on the world's top milers in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Belmont Park on Oct. 29, a race that Singletary won at Lone Star Park in 2004.

Ridden by David Flores, Singletary ($6.60) finished a mile on turf in 1:34.54. For the first half-mile, he was four lengths behind Wild Buddy, who led a compact field through fractions of 23.94 and 47.96 seconds.

Running Lass sharp in final work

MIAMI - Running Lass, who will attempt to complete a sweep of the filly division of the Florida Stallion Stakes with a victory in the $400,000 My Dear Girl Stakes, worked four furlongs in 48 seconds over a sloppy track here Saturday in her final major prep for the race. The drill was the best of the 63 half-mile works on the tab.

Invitational wins her first stakes Saturday in the $164,000 Carotene at Woodbine.

Invitational captured her first stakes Saturday at Woodbine under jockey Jono Jones in the $164,000 Carotene, winning the turf race for Ontario-foaled 3-year-old fillies by two lengths over longshot Silver Impulse.

The race was marred by an accident involving Count to Three, who crashed through the temporary rail just inside the three-sixteenths pole, unseating apprentice Emma Wilson. Wilson, Woodbine's leading rider, injured her right leg and was taken to hospital. Count to Three appeared to be uninjured.

Delaware: Southern Success wires

Left as the best pure speed horse following seven scratches, Southern Success led from start to finish in the $100,000 Dover Stakes for 2-year-olds at Delaware Park.

Ridden by Kendrick Carmouche for trainer Tim Ritchey, Southern Success ($3.40) was shadowed closely by Mister Alimony for the first six furlongs of the 1 1/16-mile Dover before drawing away to a 4 1/4-length victory. He covered the distance on a sloppy and sealed track in 1:46.71 to remain perfect in two career starts.

Philadelphia: 'Valley' romps

Valley of the Gods wins the $53,800 Pistol Packer Handicap at Philadelphia Park on Sunday.

Valley of the Gods ended Immune to Gloom's four-race winning streak when she dominated the $53,800 Pistol Packer Handicap at Philadelphia Park by 7 3/4 lengths.

A 5-year-old mare trained by Keith Lebarron and ridden by Harry Vega, Valley of the Gods ($5) won her second stakes for Pennsylvania-breds this season, leading from wire to wire. Her time for 1 1/16 miles over a sloppy track was 1:46.34.

Immune to Gloom, the 6-5 favorite, chased in second for the entire race, finishing three lengths clear of third-place Mae and Rae.

Host runs down Vanderlin

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Longshots dominated as favorites flopped when Rafael Bejarano guided Host, a 10-1 outsider, to victory Saturday in the richest race of the Keeneland fall meet, the Grade 1, $600,000 .

Host, trained by Todd Pletcher, rallied from ninth in the 10-horse field to win the Shadwell by a neck over Vanderlin, a 27-1 shot. Gulch Approval, who contested the pace the entire trip, finished third at 28-1, while Remind, a 27-1 shot, was fourth. The winner returned $22.80.

Dawn of War wires Futurity

Dawn of War ($74.60) wins the 92nd running of the $500,000 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Dawn of War quieted a Keeneland crowd of 20,217 by leading all the way at 36-1 for a 3 1/2-length triumph Saturday in the 92nd running of the $500,000 at Keeneland.

The Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity unfolded in virtually the same manner as its sister race, the Alicibiades, which was won the previous day by She Says It Best. Dawn of War negated his far outside post with a sharp break, getting to the lead and the rail by the time the field sped into the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race.

Elusive Jazz upsets Phoenix

Elusive Jazz wins the 153rd running of the Grade 3, $266,500 Phoenix BC Stakes at Keeneland on Sunday.

The Breeders' Cup Sprint might have gotten a new shooter when Elusive Jazz ($17) sped to his first stakes victory in the 153rd running of the Grade 3, $266,500 .

Ridden by Robby Albarado, Elusive Jazz laid just off the pace before looping the leading pack and quickly drawing off entering the stretch. He finished three lengths ahead of late-running Wild Tale, a 21-1 shot, in winning for the fourth time in 14 career starts. Premium Saltine was third, while Fifteen Rounds (5-2) was fifth and Bwana Charlie (2-1) was seventh in a field of eight.

Baze sustains bruises in spill

Jockey Russell Baze appeared to sustain only bruises to his left shoulder and left hip after falling when Trolley Belle collapsed entering the stretch in a Friday night race at Bay Meadows.

X-rays taken at Stanford Hospital following the spill revealed no breaks, and Baze was at Bay Meadows on Saturday morning, although he took off his mounts for the day.

Additional X-rays were scheduled to be taken Sunday as a precautionary measure, but Baze is expected to resume riding Monday.

Maryland Million card rescheduled

Laurel was forced to cancel its Maryland Million card Saturday after heavy rains resulted in flooding in central Maryland. A total of 6 1/2 inches had fallen by Saturday morning, with another one to three inches expected.

"After consulting with the Maryland Million officials we made a collective decision to cancel," said Lou Raffetto, chief operating officer for the Maryland Jockey Club. "We would not have done them justice by conducting racing on a day such as this."
