Gun Salute survives inquiry

Four-Footed Fotos
Heavy favorite Gun Salute digs deep to win Saturday's Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby over Cosmic Kris after a messy stretch run.

STICKNEY, Ill. - In horse races, what looks black and white on paper often turns into something much blurrier in reality. Gun Salute was favored at 1-5 to win the $250,000 . His presence in a five-horse field created a negative show pool of more than $47,000. And it wasn't hard to see why. Gun Salute had beaten the high-class English Channel in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes the last time he raced. On paper, he looked five lengths the best.

Asti takes Athenia in dirt bow

ELMONT, N.Y. - Asti made an amazing recovery to win the off-the-turf Saturday at Belmont Park.

The $111,300 race for fillies and mares, originally slated for 1 1/16 miles on grass, was shifted to the muddy and sealed main track at the same distance. Bohemian Lady, My Lordship, and Zosima, the three main-track-only entrants, figured to hold a solid advantage in the six-horse field.

That edge seemed even more pronounced when Asti ($16.20) broke poorly and dropped way behind the pack on the run down the backstretch.

Play Bingo last to first in Classic

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Play Bingo wins the 20th running of the $250,000 Maryland Million Classic at Laurel Park on Saturday.

Play Bingo, winless in six starts since November 2004, suddenly turned everything around on Saturday at Laurel Park, scoring a last-to-first triumph in the 20th running of the $250,000 .

Trailing the leaders by about 18 lengths in the opening half-mile of the 1 3/16-mile race, Play Bingo, swung wide into the stretch under Ryan Fogelsonger, shot to the lead, and drew clear. Aggadan, finished well for second, a length behind Play Bingo and two lengths ahead of Five Steps in third.

Reunited at her best distance in TCA

Behaving Badly puts her perfect record on the line in the $300,000 TCA Stakes on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Trainer Neil Howard is hard at work on his second set of 1,000 wins, having completed his first set Wednesday, when Soul Search won at Keeneland. After some soul searching, Howard concluded that perhaps the best way to have one of his stable stars, Reunited, contribute toward the second set is not by running her against 3-year-olds next Saturday in the Raven Run Stakes, but against older mares here Sunday in the Grade 3, $300,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes.

Trickle of Gold fastest of fast

A combination of sharp form and early speed figure to create quite a crowd fighting for the lead in Sunday's Grade 3, $150,000 Safely Kept Breeders' Cup at Laurel Park.

Not only have six of the seven 3-year-old fillies entered in the six-furlong stakes finished first or second last time out, but also they all have either led or been within a half-length of the leader in most of their good recent races.

Sovereign could be on the line

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The $250,000 Cup and Saucer is one of Woodbine's richest 2-year-old stakes, and it could help determine the Sovereign Award winner for champion of the division.

This year's renewal, to be run Sunday at 1 1/16 miles on turf, is a great betting race with a host of contenders, including Shillelagh Slew and Seeking Shelter.

Shillelagh Slew, a $40,000 yearling purchase by owner David James, is well-regarded by trainer Mike DePaulo. He closed wide from far back when he made his debut on the grass Sept. 3, finishing third despite running greenly.

She's a Jewel tries tougher

ARCADIA, Calif. - surprised trainer Jay Robbins when she pulled an upset in the Aladdin Resort Handicap over a mile on turf at Del Mar on Aug. 21. A filly that Robbins thought was primarily a sprinter, She's a Jewel successfully stretched her speed around two turns for the first time in that race.

The victory has given Robbins optimism about She's a Jewel's chances in Sunday's $100,000 Harold Ramser Handicap at Santa Anita. The conditions for the Ramser are the same as the Aladdin - a mile on turf for 3-year-old fillies - but the competition in the field of 11 is tougher.

Lord Nelson less than a lock

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Lord Nelson is the horse to beat in the $100,000 Premier's at Hastings on Sunday, but he could be vulnerable.

The 1 3/8-mile fixture drew 11 3-year-olds and up, including British Columbia Derby winner Spaghetti Mouse and Blowin in the Wind, who will try and repeat his win in the 2004 Premier's.

Maiden race launch pad for 'Rocket'

EDMONTON, Alberta - Morocian Rocket, in the money in each of his three starts, has a good chance to break through Sunday at Northlands Park in a maiden special weights affair. Eight 2-year-olds meet in a 5 1/2-furlong sprint, which goes as the third of seven races.

Morocian Rocket, owned by trainer Don Gilkyson and Triple K Stables, has a second and a pair of thirds. He has shown early speed in each of his races, all under Perry Winters, who again will be at the controls.
