Two looking to recapture past success

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Millfleet and Tusayan will both be looking to relive past glories in the $125,000 Bunty Lawless Stakes on Sunday at Woodbine.

Millfleet won last year's Bunty Lawless, which was run over a mile of yielding turf on Oct. 31. He also won the Deputy Minister Stakes a mere 11 days earlier on the main track.

Areek needs best effort in First Flight

ELMONT, N.Y. - Areek has won a remarkable 5 of 7 starts in Florida, New Jersey, and New York this year. She will need that sort of consistency to have a chance in Sunday's Grade 2, $150,000 First Flight Handicap at Belmont Park.

Trained by Mark Hennig for Shadwell Stable, won two six-furlong stakes at Monmouth Park in July and August and was second to Smokey Glacken in the Grade 3 Floral Park Handicap over six furlongs on Sept. 17.

Bella Fortuna comes right back in stakes bid

ELMONT, N.Y. - Barclay Tagg isn't one to rush horses into stakes races, but he is making an exception with his impressive maiden winner Bella Fortuna, who is one of eight juvenile fillies entered in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Tempted Stakes at Belmont Park.

The Tempted, one of four stakes on Belmont's closing-day card, is run at one mile around one turn.

Premier Dance to 4-peat?

Premier Dance, who earlier this month was scratched from the MEC Mile at Remington Park after drawing post 12, resurfaces Saturday at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M., where he will be favored to win his fourth straight stakes race in the $50,000 Governor's.

The six-furlong race for 2-year-olds drew eight, including stakes winners Might Be Hooked and Mining Gold.

Kris's Dancer named meet's best

Kris's Dancer wins the Puss N Boots Cup, one of his four victories at this year's Fort Erie meet.

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Kris's Dancer was honored as Fort Erie's horse of the year at the annual awards banquet at Fort Erie on Thursday evening.

Owned by Iris Bristow and trained by Jason Giliforte, Kris's Dancer won 4 of his 6 starts at the meet. He started the season with two second-place finishes.

Langara Lass clinches crown

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - At least one and possibly two divisional championships in the province were wrapped up last weekend.

Langara Lass solidified her spot as the top 3-year-old filly in the province with a comfortable 4 1/4-length win over Miss Me Not in the Fantasy Stakes Saturday. Regal Request staked his claim to the 2-year-old colts and geldings title with a front-running win in the Ascot Graduation Stakes Sunday.

Calder reopening, but slowly

Calder Race Course was to open for simulcasting only on Saturday, Breeders' Cup Day, and for a limited live racing card both Sunday and Monday, track President Ken Dunn announced Friday. Calder has been closed since suffering extensive damage during Hurricane Wilma on Monday.

Calder will run five races, all on the turf, on Sunday and Monday. According to Calder officials, the Sunday races will comprise Nos. 3, 6, 7, 9, and 12 from the canceled Saturday program. The regular live racing schedule is expected to resume next Thursday.

Calder nears power restoral

The president of Calder Race Course, Ken Dunn, said Thursday he was still hopeful live and simulcasting racing could resume at Calder on Saturday. Calder has been closed since suffering extensive damage from Hurricane Wilma on Monday.

"Everything is contingent on getting power restored," Dunn said Thursday. "But we have an assurance from Florida Power and Light that they have located the problem, that it should be a six- to eight-hour job to repair, and that they will have a crew out here sometime today to do the work."

The Breeders' Cup menu begins with the race immediately following the Discovery, but on any other day, this would be a whopper of a feature. For 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on dirt, and with a healthy purse of $250,000, the Discovery drew a field of 11.
