Holthus slump may be at end

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With field size averaging slightly more than 10 horses per race, the fall meet at Churchill Downs has been an outstanding one from a horseplayer's perspective. But for some trainers, trying to get a certain race to "go," or even having a horse draw into one of the many races that have been oversubscribed, has led to some trying circumstances.

"It's the toughest meet I can remember," said Bob Holthus, who has been training since 1952. "I can't get horses in, and when I have, I've had a tough time."

Winner could be 'Meant to B'

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - At first glance, If It's Meant to B appears overmatched in the $49,000 optional-claiming feature for fillies and mares Wednesday at Aqueduct.

A 3-year-old New York-bred, faces five hard-knocking rivals in the 6 1/2-furlong race.

Upon further review, however, If It's Meant to B should be a factor in this spot. A chestnut trained by Heriberto Cedano, she returns following a pair of discouraging turf stakes efforts at Saratoga.

Pick six carryover on the line

ALBANY, Calif. - There is a $64,931 pick six carryover for Wednesday at Golden Gate Fields, and it looks eminently hittable with a $72 ticket (3x1x2x3x2x1).

Race 3, the opening leg of the pick six, is a $20,000 claimer at six furlongs and could be the toughest of the six races.

There is an abundance of speed in the race, and Outofthewest could be the speed horse to play. Retirees Three should be poised to get first run on the speed horses. Always Remember has recorded 5 of his 7 career victories here, and has the ability to close.

G G's Dolly best of 7 in sprint

CHICAGO - Winter racing at Hawthorne can produce strange results, but even so, it would qualify as news of the weird if G G's Dolly loses the Wednesday feature here. G G's Dolly is a real racehorse, a winner in half her six starts. She finished second at Keeneland in her most recent race, and meets six apparently overmatched opponents in the third race on Wednesday, a third-level sprint allowance with a $35,000 claiming option.
