Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Pure as Gold stalked the pace, took the lead after the field crossed over the dirt onto the main turf course and won by 1 3/4 lengths over Saint Buddy.

Ah Day handles Tessio distance

Ah Day wins the Federico Tesio Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico.

BALTIMORE - Even a trainer who wins more than 6,000 races can sometimes be wrong.

Trainer King Leatherbury was very skeptical about his 3-year-old gelding Ah Day's chances to get 1 1/8 miles. But on a sloppy Pimlico track on a dreary afternoon, Ah Day proved his trainer's doubts were unfounded as he rolled to a 5 1/2-length victory in the $121,500 .

Vegas Play, second to Sweetnorthernsaint in the Miracle Wood Stakes, finished second in here by 6 1/2 lengths over Putonyerdancinshuz. Colby Cat finished fourth.

Sharp Lisa wins the $250,000 Santa Barbara Handicap at Santa Anita on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - It took arguably a career-best performance from Sharp Lisa to deny owner Michael Bello and trainer Bobby Frankel a record fourth consecutive win in Saturday's $250,000 at Santa Anita.

Sharp Lisa, who set the pace, held off a late run from Frankel and Bello's representative, Eternal Melody, to win the Grade 2 race by a nose. Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Sharp Lisa ($10.40) ran 1 1/4 miles on turf in 2:02.17.

Fonner race declared no contest

The first race at Fonner Park on Saturday was declared a no contest following a spill entering the first turn of a three-turn mile and 70-yard race.

Apprentice Preto Espindola was riding Fifth Page when he was caught in tight quarters between rivals and clipped the heels of another horse. Both horse and rider went down with Espindola prone on the track as the field raced through the second turn. When the field reached the backstretch, the track's outriders instructed the riders to pull up.

T.H. Approval's goal

T.H. Approval's year has been geared toward getting him ready for the San Juan Capistrano.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The 2006 campaign of T.H. Approval has been geared entirely toward a defense of his title in Sunday's $250,000 San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap at Santa Anita.

When T.H. Approval resumed training last fall after recovering from a minor injury, trainer Eduardo Inda called the Grade 2 San Juan Capistrano his main goal. That plan has not changed.

Chilean star Tanta Suerte makes U.S. debut

Willow O Wisp runs in Saturday's Inglewood Handicap at Hollywood.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Tanta Suerte had a nearly flawless campaign in Chile last year, reeling off five wins in six starts and earning the 2-year-old filly championship for the 2004-05 season.

How that form translates to the United States will be known as quickly as Wednesday, when she makes her American debut in the Grade 3, $100,000 Wilshire Handicap at a mile on turf. The Wilshire is the feature race on the opening day of the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting.

Relief, but not a whole lot for One Way Flight

Strummer, winning the Winkfield, takes on One Way Flight in Sunday's Times Square.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - After running against the likes of Achilles of Troy and Too Much Bling in his last two starts, One Way Flight would appear to have found some class relief in Sunday's $100,000 Times Square division of the New York Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct.

A seven-furlong race restricted to 3-year-olds sired by New York-based stallions, the Times Square is easier, but it is by no means an easy spot. One Way Flight will face 10 rivals in the Times Square, including stakes winners Classic Pack and Strummer.

Smokey Stover may come cross-country for Withers

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Last year, the northern California-based trainer Greg Gilchrist racked up the frequent flier miles with his champion sprinter Lost in the Fog. Gilchrist may be ready to hit the road again with his current speedy 3-year-old, Smokey Stover.

Smokey Stover, a winner of 2 of 3 starts, all at Golden Gate Fields, is under consideration to run in next Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct.

Gilchrist on Friday said Smokey Stover is "50-50" for the race, though he does have a plane on order for Tuesday.

Cotey thinking filly has shot in Star Shoot

Michael Burns Photo Ltd.
Thinking Out Loud, here winning the Coronation Futurity, would have to be supplemented to the Queen's Plate.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Drinknwiththedevil is short on experience.

But Dave Cotey, trainer and co-owner of Drinknwiththedevil, believes she may be long on talent and deserves the chance to participate here Sunday in Woodbine's $125,000 Star Shoot for 3-year-old fillies.

"I don't know if she's this good, but we've got to give her a shot," said Cotey. "She's American-bred - there are not all that many races for her."

Drinknwiththedevil, a Kentucky-bred by Devil His Due out of Tipsytoo, came into the track last year but did not make it to the races.
