Monashee cranked for season debut

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Monashee and Delta Colleen are the only two horses ever to win the British Columbia Oaks and Ballerina in the same year. Delta Collen, who is in the local hall of fame, is one of the best horses ever to run at Hastings. Monashee won 5 of her 7 starts last year as a 3-year-old. She dominated fillies and mares in the Grade 3 Ballerina Breeders' Cup, and was named the 2005 horse of the year in British Columbia.

Ragin Nonno fresh and ready to fire

AUBURN, Wash. - Ragin Nonno was a good 2-year-old here last season, when he posted 2 wins and 2 seconds from 7 starts and finished his campaign with a fourth in the Gottstein Futurity. He will need to be better to win Sunday's six-furlong Auburn Stakes for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs, and trainer Dave Bennett said Ragin Nonno is.

"I think he has matured quite a bit," said Bennett.

Local champ has her work cut out

CALGARY, Alberta - Kaylee's Magic, Alberta's 2005 horse of the year last year after winning three stakes and narrowly missing a fourth, faces perhaps her most stern test in the form of invader Bond Queen in the $50,000 Mount Royal here at Stampede Park on Sunday.

Kaylee's Magic is the 121-pound highweight in the field of six 3-year-old fillies. She concedes one pound to Bond Queen, who arrives fresh off a front-running tally in the 6 1/2-furlong Supernaturel on April 22 at Hastings.

Mocita has three factors to make her a standout

It's all systems go for Mocita in Sunday's $45,000 Emergency Nurse Stakes at Calder. The Emergency Nurse, a 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares, shares the card with the $75,000 Georgia Oaks, a restricted turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Mocita has three things going for her in the Emergency Nurse. She drops sharply in class from graded stakes, makes her third start off a layoff, and has the closing speed to take advantage of what is certain to be a fast pace.

Derby may lure Wanna Runner

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Wanna Runner, Red Raymond, and Admiral's Arch are among the early probables for the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Derby on Saturday.

Greeley's Legacy, who was fourth last out in the Grade 2 Lexington for trainer George Weaver, is also possible for the race, said Mike Shamburg, stakes coordinator for Lone Star.

"It's a real competitive field," said Shamburg. "Like in years past, it's a good prep for the Preakness on timeline."

Johnson not counting on win with Our Madison in Fury

Our Madison wraps up 2005 with a victory in the Ontario Lassie. Her trainer feels she may need a race to get fit.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Our Madison, who was claimed for $40,000 here last Aug. 11, made trainer Red Johnson look like a genius when she closed out her campaign with an upset win in the 1 1/16-mile Ontario Lassie here at Woodbine.

But Johnson, 58, isn't about to get carried away when it comes to Our Madison's return to action here in Sunday's Fury.

"I imagine she'll need a race," said Johnson. "She didn't come in until mid-March. I don't think she'll be fit enough.

Johnston takes shot at running own stable

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Rob Johnston makes his debut as a full-fledged trainer at Fort Erie this weekend.

The son of C.R. Johnston, who was twice the leading trainer at Fort Erie, in 1997 and 1998, Rob Johnston has been away from these parts for seven years. For six of those years, he was the farm manager and trainer at Bruno Schickedanz's huge horse spread in Ocala.

The horse population, including breeding stock, in the initial year there was 99.

"When I left it was 450," said Johnston, who spent 2005 as a farm trainer for Martin Stable South, a Florida outfit.

Ericka's Lass faces the boys in sprint

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - A lack of participants in an allowance race for mares offered over the first two days of entries has forced the top local mares to take on males in Sunday's featured seventh race, a $20,000 allowance race at five furlongs.

Ericka's Lass, the top filly or mare here the past two seasons, tops the three mares entered. A 5-year-old daughter of Limit Out trained by Emile Corbel, Ericka's Lass won the La Verendrye and Winnipeg Sun here last season.

Lemons Forever upsets in 'Oaks'

Lemons Forever, the longest shot in a 14-horse field at 47-1, won the Kentucky Oaks in a stunning upset, rallying widest in the stretch under Mark Guidry to beat Ermine, a 10-1 chance, paying $96.20 to win. Lemons Forever, trained by Dallas Stewart, had eked out an entry-level allowance win Feb. 9 at Oaklawn Park, and finished third in the Grade 3 Bourbonette Stakes at Turfway in her last start, and she broke Friday from post 14.
