Talented but fragile Regal Red returns

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The sensational Regal Red makes her 2006 debut in the Vancouver Sun Stakes on Saturday at Hastings. Due to a saucer fracture, Regal Red started just twice in 2005, and her trainer, Robbie Anderson, is hoping for a more productive season this year from the 5-year-old mare.

Knight's Covenant looks sharp

CALGARY, Alberta - The second half of the 47-day spring meet here at Stampede Park has begun.

Saturday's nine-race program is day No. 25 for a stand that has suffered on occasion from fields short on both quantity and quality. But the meet is gaining some momentum.

There were nine races on both Friday and Saturday, and on Wednesday there were 17 nominations submitted for the May 20 Teeworth Plate and 13 nominations for the May 22 Ken Pearson Memorial.

'Ruckus' returns in sprint

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The accomplished veteran Barbeau Ruckus will meet upstart Main Executive and six other Ontario-sired runners Saturday at Woodbine in the six-furlong, $125,000 New Providence Stakes.

Barbeau Ruckus has won 11 of 32 starts, including nine stakes, all under the guidance of trainer Ross Armata. He was moved to the barn of trainer George Newland over the winter, and is making his seasonal debut in a familiar spot.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Surf Cat could make the California handicap division into his own personal playground in coming months.

In two sprint stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year, Surf Cat dominated his rivals with easy wins.

will try a longer distance, 1 1/16 miles, in Saturday's $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at Hollywood Park, a race that could lead to a start in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 8. Judging from his recent form, Surf Cat could eventually give horses such as Lava Man a true test in major stakes.

Da Stoops aiming at Affirmed and Swaps

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Da Stoops, a striking winner of the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes on April 30, returned to racetrack training at Santa Anita on Thursday after missing more than a week of training because of a bout of colic, trainer Bob Baffert said.

The colic was detected the day after the Snow Chief Stakes, the richest race for California-bred 3-year-olds.

Da Stoops won the Snow Chief Stakes by 5 1/2 lengths, his third stakes win. The first two stakes wins came in sprints at Santa Anita during the winter.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Scott Lake has had a number of talented sprinters. His latest is Pisgah, a 5-year-old gelded son of Good and Tough who has turned from underachiever to virtually unbeatable.

Coming off a track-record performance in an allowance race at Delaware Park on April 25, Pisgah will seek his first stakes victory in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park. Pisgah has won 3 of his last 4 starts, his only loss coming to Kelly's Landing, a stakes winner and a track-record holder at Churchill Downs.

Calhoun runs four in Got Koko

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Last year, trainer Bret Calhoun accounted for the superfecta with his four starters in a division of the Texas Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park. On Saturday, two of those fillies and two others from Calhoun's barn will attempt to lock up another Texas Stallion Stakes for their trainer, this time the $125,000 Got Koko Division. The 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies is one of two undercard stakes supporting the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Derby.

DM Shicago set for 2006 debut

Defending Quarter Horse world champion DM Shicago, purchased earlier this year by Jim and Marilyn Helzer and now trained by Heath Taylor, makes his 2006 debut in the Grade 1, $98,010 MBNA America Oklahoma Challenge on Sunday night at Remington Park.

The winner receives a berth in the Grade 1, $300,000 MBNA America Challenge Championship on Nov. 11 at Lone Star Park.
