High Button Shoes wins the $152,000 Hendrie Stakes Sunday at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - High Button Shoes ($6.80) parlayed a perfect stalking trip into a decisive victory Sunday at Woodbine in the $152,000 Hendrie Stakes, a six and a half-furlong dash for fillies and mares.

It was the first stakes score for High Button Shoes, who tracked the leaders from a three-wide position after breaking from post 9 in the 10-horse field. She hit the front at the top of the stretch, and then drew off to prevail by three and a half lengths, in a final time of 1:17.38 seconds.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Grey Swallow's easy win in Saturday's $250,000 at Hollywood Park was little more than a trial for the Grade 1 Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park on June 10.

The winner of the 2004 Irish Derby, Grey Swallow made his U.S. debut in the Grade 2 Murray, and overwhelmed four rivals. Ridden by Alex Solis, Grey Swallow tracked pacesetter Brecon Beacon and pulled clear when roused in early stretch to win by five lengths.

Wanna Runner wins Lone Star Derby

Wanna Runner earned $185,000 for his Lone Star Derby win Saturday, which was his fourth career victory in eight starts.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Wanna Runner indicated he will be a force in next month's $1 million Queen's Plate when he rolled to a commanding, five and a quarter length win in the Grade 3, $300,000 at Lone Star Park on Saturday.

It was the second straight dominant derby win for Wanna Runner, who last month captured the $600,000 WinStar Derby at Sunland Park by four and three quarter lengths. His margin of victory Saturday was the largest in the 10-year running of the Lone Star Derby.

Surf Cat goes from last to first to capture Saturday's $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at Hollywood Park.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The quarter-mile rally that saw Surf Cat go from last to first in Saturday's $150,000 at Hollywood Park left trainer Bruce Headley stunned.

"I saw a lightning flash," Headley said. "That was some kind of move."

It was a winning move, as Surf Cat ($2.40) drew clear before the eighth pole and won the Grade 2 LeRoy by 3 1/2 lengths, finishing 1 1/16 miles in a quick 1:40.65.

The victory confirmed that Surf Cat is a leading contender in California's handicap division this year, and possibly in the nation.

First day down south, Garcia grabs two wins

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jockey Martin Garcia and agent Roger Olguin were reviewing the 21-year-old apprentice's mounts for the weekend when Olguin mentioned that Garcia's best chance for a winner might come on Sunday.

To Garcia, that seemed too long. "Why not today?" he asked Olguin on Friday.

That evening, in his first day of riding in Southern California, Garcia took hold of matters. Garcia won two races from four mounts - Lemaire ($9.80) in the fourth race and Pay Houston ($17.80) in the eighth.

Tiger takes over in sprint

ELMONT, N.Y. - After Tiger bowed a tendon for the second time in his career in the spring of 2004, veterinarians told the geldings' owner, Susan Moore, that the horse should be retired from racing.

Moore, who owns Tiger with her husband, John, was not one to give up that easily, and instructed Dr. Patty Hogan of the New Jersey Equine Clinic to "do everything you possibly can for him."

More Than Pretty finished a length ahead of Handlewoman, who was compromised by an awkward start. Bratt'sstablestar finished third, while Serena's Cat, the even-money favorite in a field of 10, had no apparent excuse when finishing eighth in the five-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies.
