Sweet Talker should get stalking trip she likes

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Sweet Talker can be closer to the pace than most of her rivals Monday in the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff - as if her credentials alone aren't enough to point her out as the one to beat. A Grade 1 winner, she will take on defending champ Katdogawn and multiple stakes winner Paz Ciudadana in the one-mile turf race for fillies and mares. The WinStar is one of six stakes worth a cumulative $1 million Monday at Lone Star Park.

Biancone has two major threats

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Trainer Patrick Biancone will be the most active trainer on Lone Star Million Day with horses in each of the six stakes that make up the richest card of the meet. His best chances for victory appear to lie with Man of Illusion in the $100,000 Beck Auto Group Turf Sprint and Stream Cat in the $150,000 Pin Oak Stud USA Stakes.

All of the Biancone horses are due to arrive at Lone Star Park on Monday morning, aboard a chartered flight from Kentucky.

Rivals eager to test Electrify's skills

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Electrify, a dominant winner of consecutive stakes, makes his first start outside his native state of Florida on Monday in the $65,000 Spend a Buck Stakes at Monmouth Park.

The one-mile race for 3-year-olds is the featured event on the holiday card, which starts at 12:50 p.m.

A homebred for Padua Stables trained by Eddie Plesa Jr., Electrify took the Sophomore Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs by three lengths on April 8. His follow-up was even more impressive - an eight-length romp in the Unbridled Stakes at Calder on April 29.

Hard to see who's best in Barksdale

There is little separating the field in the $50,000 Barksdale Handicap on Monday, with four of the seven starters having won stakes over the turf course at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La.

Silver Haze and Middleweight are in that group, and they will start as the 119-pound highweights in the Barksdale, to be run at one mile on turf. Dreamsandvisions and Northern Scene are also stakes winners over the local turf. The field is rounded out by stakes winners Witt Ante and Prince T., and the stakes-placed Commander Buck.

'Fotis' ready for a mile

MIAMI - Twilight Road is back to defend his title in Monday's $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap at Calder. Last year's runner-up, Whos Crying Now, returns as well. The multiple Grade 1-placed Congrats will make his local debut in the Grade 3 race, while the versatile Gigawatt returns to the main track off his recent win on turf in the Miami Mile Breeders' Cup.

But the one they may all have to catch in the 1 1/16-mile Memorial Day Handicap is Mister Fotis.

Pisgah, best on dirt, looks vulnerable on turf

Pisgah could be hard-pressed to keep his perfect 2-for-2 record on grass intact in Monday's $100,000 Turf Monster Handicap at Philadelphia Park.

Although Pisgah has proven capable on turf for trainer Scott Lake, the 5-year-old is probably better on the main track. He set a Delaware Park track record by running six furlongs in 1:07.92, earning a career-best 112 Beyer, and posted back-to-back Beyers of 108 and 103 in dirt sprints at that track within a span of 10 days last July.

At Mountaineer, question is: Do they still have it?

Bettors at Mountaineer Race Track must gauge for themselves whether a pair of well-accomplished 8-year-olds in Monday's holiday features are still stakes-caliber runners or have lost a step or two.

Lady Grace, the queen of Mountaineer's turf course, makes her first start since September in the $75,000 Decoration Day Handicap, one race after Spruce Run, a Grade 3 winner last year, makes his second start of the year in the $75,000 Memorial Day Handicap. Both races are at one mile on turf.

Finger Lakes: Top Shoter seeks 3-peat

Top Shoter, last season's outstanding horse at Finger Lakes, where he is 7 for 8 lifetime, seeks to capture the George W. Barker Handicap for the third straight year.

The Barker, which goes as race 6, is co-featured with the Susan B. Anthony Handicap for fillies and mares. Both $50,000 stakes are restricted to New York-breds and will be contested at six furlongs.

Delaware: Surprisingly tough field

A far tougher group of older horses were entered for the Eight Thirty at Delaware Park than its status as an overnight stakes and relatively small $50,000 purse would seem to dictate.

The 10 runners in the about 1 1/8-mile race, the track's first turf stakes of the season, include T.D. Vance, a Grade 2 winner last season at Saratoga; Tiganello, who came within a whisker of winning a Group 2 race in Europe last summer and is now in the barn of Todd Pletcher; and old-timers Rochester and Dr. Kashnikow, who have combined for 19 turf wins and $1.9 million in earnings.

Lincoln: High Dice back again

High Dice will try for his fifth Big Red Mile victory as the 11-year-old makes his second start of the year in the $20,000 feature for older Nebraska-breds at the Lincoln State Fair.

The obvious back-class horse of the field, High Dice will be coupled in the wagering with Cassanova Kid as trainer Herb Riecken sends out three horses in the Big Red Mile. He will also send out Mortrump as a separate entry.
