Canterbury: Nicole's Dream wires

Nicole's Dream ($2.80) led from gate to wire in the $40,000 Honor the Hero Turf Express Stakes at Canterbury Park.

Facing five colts and geldings in the five-furlong race, Nicole's Dream, a 6-year old mare, pulled away under E.T. Baird to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths in 56.25 seconds over firm going. America West finished second, edging Rocky River by three-quarters of a length.

Larry Rivelli trains Nicole's Dream, who improved her record to 21 victories from 45 starts and earnings to more than $592,000.

Lincoln: 'David' repeats

What About David ($4.80) defended his title in the $20,900 Big Red Mile Handicap at the Lincoln State Fair with an impressive three-length win over eight other Nebraska-bred rivals.

Ridden by R.D. Williams for trainer Andy Johnson, What About David shook clear into the stretch and prevailed in 1:37.60 for the mile over a fast track.

DePaulo's Plate prospects hit bump in road

Bad Hat, winning the Kingarvie at Woodbine last December, returned to training Monday but has been taken off the Queen's Plate trail.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - A virus that has been sweeping through the Woodbine backstretch has put a serious crimp in the Queen's Plate plans of trainer Mike DePaulo.

Coming into the 2006 Woodbine meeting, DePaulo appeared to have a solid pair of candidates for the $1 million Queen's Plate. Shillelagh Slew, who had finished third here in last fall's Coronation Futurity, and Bad Hat, who was undefeated in three starts at 2. Both wintered with DePaulo in Florida and returned to Woodbine in fine fettle.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Five months before the Breeders' Cup Mile is run at Churchill Downs, Aragorn is displaying the sort of form that would fit in the nation's leading race for turf milers.

Monday at Hollywood Park, Aragorn won the most important race of his career in the $321,000 .

Ridden by Corey Nakatani, Aragorn ($15), the 6-1 longshot in a field of six, was always near the front and zoomed past pacesetter Willow O Wisp in early stretch to win the Grade 1 Shoemaker by 1 3-4 lengths. Aragorn ran a mile on turf in 1:32.95.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Magnum indicated his intent to be a player in the handicap division this year when he rallied for a length and a quarter win over Texcess in the Grade 3, $400,000 at Lone Star Park on Monday.

The mile and a sixteenth race was the richest of six stakes on the card worth a cumulative $1 million. The program is called Lone Star Million Day and it is the richest day of racing in Texas.

Spanish Highway prevails in FSN Handicap

AUBURN, Wash. - Spanish Highway stalked the sizzling pace of Flamethrowintexan from the inside, angled out to collar that rival inside the furlong marker and dug deep to prevail by a neck in Monday's $40,000 FSN Handicap at Emerald Downs. Spanish Highway got the 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:14.40 under Ken Tohill and earned $22,000 for owners David and Elaine Parks and K J Star Stable.

Flamethrowintexan, the 9-5 choice in his first start of the year, finished a clear second over Norm's Nephew despite burning through a half mile in 43.20 and six furlongs in 1:07.80.

Sol Mi Fa wins U.S. debut

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Irish-bred Sol Mi Fa ($12) edged stablemate Soothsay to win her U.S. debut and give trainer James Cassidy a one-two finish in Monday's $81,250 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Oaks.

Sol Mi Fa sat off Hill of Grace's tepid pace before making a four-wide move at the quarter pole to open a lead in the lane. She was challenged by Soothsay, who squeezed through a narrow opening along the rail, but had enough to win the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes by three-quarters of a length in 1:44.30.

ELMONT, N.Y. - It was a happy homecoming for Silver Train, who returned to his favorite surface and to the winner's circle in Monday's Grade 1, $600,000 at Belmont Park.

Racing at Belmont for the first time since winning last year's Breeders' Cup Sprint, Silver Train took over from pacesetter Mass Media just outside the eighth pole, opened up a clear lead in deep stretch, and just held off a late-running Sun King to win the Met Mile by a head. It was 2 3/4 lengths back to Mass Media in third.

Surf Cat out of Californian, Gold Cup

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Surf Cat, the winner of three graded stakes for older horses in California this year, has resumed training after missing two weeks because of a bruised foot, trainer Bruce Headley said.

The injury will prevent Surf Cat from starting in two stakes at Hollywood Park in coming weeks - the $250,000 Californian Stakes on June 17 and the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 8. Headley said that Surf Cat's next goal is the $250,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 22.
