Posts could be decisive in turf stakes

Adam Coglianese
Elisa's Energy (above) is drawn outside in post 11, next to Lady Bi Bi (12).

ELMONT, N.Y. - Up-and-comers clash with the old guard in Sunday's 28th running of the $100,000-added Mount Vernon Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares, scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on the inner turf course.

Fifteen were entered and 12 will run, and with less than a sixteenth of a mile to the first turn, post positions could be a factor, especially since a handful who ran in divisions of last year's Mount Vernon - The Lamp Is Lit (post 1), On the Bus (2), Nurse Culkin (4), Sabellina (5), and Little Buttercup (6) - drew favorably toward the inside.

Flimsy field in Quicken Tree

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The $65,000 Quicken Tree Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sunday is the clubhouse leader for the worst stakes of the spring-summer meeting.

There are no stakes winners in the field of six California-breds and only one horse has won an allowance race - Johnny High Brite, a 4-year-old gelding who was a surprise entrant in the 1 1/2-mile turf stakes.

Bear Soldier small but speedy

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The 99 runnings of the Victoria Stakes have produced many rapid 2-year-olds, including 1981 Eclipse Award winner Deputy Minister, Nearctic, and Fozzie Bear.

Bear Soldier will try to add his name to the list in Sunday's renewal of the five-furlong dash, which is worth $125,000.

Bear Soldier, a $70,000 2-year-old purchase from a Florida sale, was an authoritative winner of his debut, in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special May 28. He displayed a smooth, efficient stride and earned a Beyer Figure of 71.

Look for speedster to rebound

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The seventh race at Hastings on Sunday, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies running for a top claiming price of $35,000, is one of the most unpredictable races on the 10-race card. Considering that none of the nine horses entered have won going the distance, and that only two have actually gone farther than 6 1/2 furlongs, it's difficult to figure who the actual favorite will be.

Tanaka buys filly Rising Cross

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Rising Cross, the runner-up in the English Oaks on June 2, has been bought by owner Gary Tanaka, the filly's English trainer, John Best, said Friday.

Rising Cross could be sent to the United States to race, although Best said plans for the filly beyond a scheduled start in Sunday's Italian Oaks had not been finalized. There have been discussions about running Rising Cross in the $750,000 American Oaks at Hollywood Park on July 2, but Best warned that she would not make the trip if the ground is firm.
