ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The term "moko jumbies," which refers to colorfully costumed stilt-walkers who are a staple of parades in some Caribbean countries, has its origin in voodoo's "mumbo jumbo."
On Saturday, trainer Joe Walls will be hoping that his gelding Moka Jumbie can cast a winning spell over his rivals in the $150,000 Toronto Cup.
Moka Jumbie, owned by David Kertland's Shelter Valley Farm, will face seven rivals in the Toronto Cup, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Noble Stella will be out to win the 1 1/8-mile Dance Smartly Handicap for fillies and mares for the second consecutive year on Saturday at Woodbine.
Noble Stella has evolved into one of the leading turf females in North America this year under the guidance of trainer Roger Attfield. She led throughout in her second start of the year in the Grade 3 Bewitch at 1 1/2 miles at Keeneland in April, then ended up second to Honey Ryder in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Handicap at Belmont Park in May.
FORT ERIE, Ontario - Following the fourth-place finish of Ascot Bill in the Queen's Plate three weeks ago, his jockey Justin Stein declared excitedly that it was his mount's "best race of his life."
Stein, an apprentice, was aboard Ascot Bill in all four of his races this year. He wasn't in the saddle when Ascot Bill won his debut in his lone start last year.
"[Ascot Bill] was closing more ground than anyone else in the race," Stein said. "He was flying. It was unbelievable. It was like he was almost sprinting."
MIAMI - Madcap Escapade used her abundant speed to run the opposition off their feet during an all-too-brief career that ended prematurely following her convincing 5 1/4-length victory in the 2005 Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder. But the family legacy has been ably carried on by her younger half-sister, Dubai Escapade, who will be heavily favored to defend her sibling's title in Saturday's 22nd renewal of the Grade 1 .
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Lucky J. H., the winner of two stakes at Hollywood Park this year, will miss the $300,000 San Diego Handicap on July 22 because of a foot problem, trainer Carla Gaines said.
Gaines said that Lucky J. H. has resumed training, and galloped at Santa Anita on Wednesday, but that he will not be ready for the Grade 2 San Diego at 1 1/16 miles.
"It's nagging, and it's not 100 percent," Gaines said of the foot. "I missed a work because of it."
INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Three races for optional claimers and allowance runners highlight Friday's program at Hollywood Park, the start of the final weekend of the spring-summer meeting.

But the halter laid next to her stall read "Rue des Reves," meaning this was the defending champion in the Lady Canterbury Handicap.
