ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine's converted Standardbred racetrack, which will host dirt racing here beginning Saturday and through the end of August while a new Polytrack surface is installed on the main track, got its first road test on Friday morning and received a passing grade.

Woodbine raced on its former dirt surface for the final time last Monday, and began moving that track's cushion to the inner oval on Tuesday morning.

Woodbine mutuel clerk strike settled

Woodbine's pari-mutuel workers, who have been on strike since June 21, were scheduled to be back on the job as of noon Saturday after an undisclosed majority voted in favor of a new contract on Thursday night.

"We're delighted to have a settlement," said Nick Eaves, senior vice president of Woodbine. "Obviously you never like to go through any sort of a disruption.

Monmouth cancels Friday

Monmouth Park has canceled its Friday card, the second straight program lost to the New Jersey state government budget crisis.

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine and the state legislators reached a deal Thursday afternoon on a new budget, the first step in ending the government shutdown that forced the closure Wednesday of the state's racetracks and halted all simulcast and account wagering.

Lava Man going for a refill

Horsephotos
Lava Man, with Tony Romero up, gallops Thursday at Hollywood for his Gold Cup defense.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Lava Man has already secured a place in racing history. Not many $50,000 claimers go on to win multiple Grade 1 stakes and more than $2.3 million.

Last year, in his rise to the top of the California handicap division, Lava Man gave his best performance in the $750,000 , which he won by a record 8 3/4 lengths.

Top three from Affirmed get a rematch in Swaps

This is the time of year when Hollywood television executives go on hiatus and program plenty of reruns. That philosophy will continue early Saturday afternoon at Hollywood Park with the Grade 2, $350,000 Swaps Breeders' Cup Stakes, which looks like a repeat of the Affirmed Handicap run three weeks ago.

were the first three across the line in the Affirmed, and they are back for a rematch in the Swaps, joined only by the outmatched Potential, a recent maiden claiming winner who is guaranteed at least $21,000 in prize money because no one else entered.

Cacique beat Relaxed Gesture (2) by a head in the Manhattan, and English Channel (rail) was fourth.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - All week, the Grade 1, $750,000 on Saturday at Monmouth Park shaped up as an excellent race. But the ominous cloud of the New Jersey state government shutdown cast the shadow of a possible cancellation.

The danger appeared to pass Thursday afternoon as Gov. Jon Corzine and the legislators hammered out a budget deal that should allow Monmouth to reopen by Saturday.

Now it's full speed ahead for the U.N., the premier turf event of the Monmouth meet.

Wildcat Bettie B's versatility the key

ELMONT, N.Y. - Her versatile running style gives Wildcat Bettie B a slight edge in a wildly competitive renewal of Saturday's Grade 1, $250,000 Prioress Stakes at Belmont Park. Five of the nine 3-year-old fillies enter the Prioress off a win, and the four that don't all have at least one race on their form that makes them eligible in here.

Singalong deserving of stakes shot

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - It took Singalong eight races to beat maidens, and she finally got the job done at Santa Anita in February. The 4-year-old filly has more than made up for lost time in subsequent starts, winning 2 of 3 races, all in allowance company.

Saturday at Hollywood Park, Singalong makes her stakes debut in the $65,000 Redondo Beach Stakes for fillies and mares at a mile on turf. The race is restricted to nonwinners of a Grade 1 or Grade 2 race at a mile or farther this year, but none of the nine starters has even placed in such a race this year.

Bully Cat tries to build on debut

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The local juvenile fillies get their first crack at added money in the Timber Music Stakes at Hastings Saturday. The 6 1/2-furlong feature drew eight horses and they'll all be going around two turns for the first time.

Two horses sired by Holy Bull - Bully Cat and Chelsey's Image - appear to be strong contenders. A Kentucky-bred, Bully Cat scored an easy five-length win when she debuted in a 3 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race at Stampede Park June 9. Bully Cat is trained by Ron Grieves and will be ridden by Jake Barton.
