'Ghost' in reappearance

ALBANY, Calif. - The millionaire Texcess, Grade 2 winner Spellbinder, and local multiple stakes winner Sharp Writer are among the eight runners in the Grade 3, $150,000 Berkeley Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on Monday. But they will have to beat Gotaghostofachance, who returns off a long layoff in the 1 1/16-mile race.

Gotaghostofachance has more than a ghost of a chance here, even though he will be making his first start since winning the seven-furlong Grade 2 Sport Page last October at Belmont.

Opportunity knocks for dozen

Giliforte all prepared to jump in the lake

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Trainer Jason Giliforte said that he has his swimming technique down pat for Labor Day.

Giliforte hopes to display his prowess following the running of the Puss n Boots Cup on Monday. It's been an unbroken tradition that someone on the winning crew celebrates with a plunge into one of the three infield lakes here at the Fort.

The tradition was born when owner Robert Elkins fulfilled a pledge and dived fully clothed into a lake after his Dancing With Beans scored in the 1996 Puss n Boots.

Sextet in position to give Keogh four-peat in Halton

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - After winning the last three runnings of the Halton Stakes with the now-retired Mobil, trainer Mike Keogh will try to make it four in a row Monday with Sextet.

A one-mile grass race, the Halton is one of six $125,000 stakes on the Woodbine card that are restricted to graduates of local yearling sales.

Sextet, a son of 1996 Canadian International winner Singspiel, finished third in the 2005 Halton. He may be peaking this year at age 5 and recently captured a 1 1/4-mile allowance with an eye-catching wide rally under Emile Ramsammy.
