Firsts for Cummiskey in China Basin

ALBANY, Calif. - Irish-bred Cummiskey ($12.60) wound up with plenty of firsts in winning the $55,625 China Basin at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

The 4-year-old gelding purchased by trainer James Cassidy for himself this spring scored his first stakes victory, first U.S. victory and first turf victory, capturing the China Basin at 1 1/16 miles on the turf by four lengths over First Rate Event, who nosed out pacesetting Shadow Raider for second.

Cummiskey had been 0-for-5 on turf in Great Britain and ran fourth and third on the turf in his first two American starts.

Essential Edge captures Ontario Colleen

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The royally-bred Essential Edge ($30.20) blew away a good field under jockey Jono Jones in Saturday's $176,300 Ontario Colleen Stakes at Woodbine.

Over a course labeled yielding, Essential Edge vied with Devil's Bride and Sudsy Baby through moderate fractions. Jones asked Essential Edge to kick on early in the stretch, and they drew off for a four-length score over favored Strike Softly. Like a Gem finished another length back in third in the 12-horse field of 3-year-old fillies.

British Blue takes Tri-State

While heavily favored Silver Tree finished out of the money, British Blue barely held off fellow longshot Gallo Del Bar in an eventful 30th running of the $50,000 Tri-State Handicap on Saturday at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Cindago's career was put on hold with a knee injury at the end of last year, but he came back roaring on Saturday to post an upset win in the $106,300 at the expense of heavily favored Brother Derek, the Santa Anita Derby winner, who turned in a dull effort while finishing fourth in a five-horse field.

Saratoga carryover reaches $335,280

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Premium Tap's 31-1 upset win in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes ensured there would be a pick six carryover of $335,280 entering Sunday's penultimate card at Saratoga.

Premium Tap returned $64 in the Whitney and was one of five double-digit winners in the sequence. Other winners in the sequence were Tiz Wonderful ($12.60), Allaboutmack ($11.60), Pomeroy ($14.20), Fete ($8.80), and Keen Lassie ($12.80).

The consolation payout (5 of 6) Saturday returned $4,621.

Erroneous I D wins Sport City

Bossier City, La. - Erroneous I D ($12.40), a wire-to-wire winner of his last start in optional claiming company, changed tactics Saturday afternoon and rallied strongly from off the pace to win the $75,000 Sport City Handicap at Louisiana Downs, lowering the course record in the process. Left in the winner's wake was One Tuff Fox, who finished four and a half lengths further back followed by Waupaca and Northern Scene. Cajole and Mauk Four were late scratches.

DEL MAR, Calif. - The build-up to Monday's $250,000 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies began in earnest when the Del Mar meeting started in July. Impressive performances by 2-year-old fillies dominated the early weeks of the season.

Picking among those fillies will not be easy. beat maidens by 4 1/2 lengths on July 23 in her second start, followed a week later by She's Included's win in a six-furlong maiden race by 3 3/4 lengths.
