Soldier's Dancer best surprise of day

MIAMI - As expected, several new stars emerged from Saturday's Florida Million Day, not the least of which was Herman Heinlein's promising 2-year-old Soldier's Dancer.

Returning from a two-month layoff, Soldier's Dancer registered a 6 3/4-length victory in his grass debut in the Arthur Appleton Juvenile Turf Stakes, earning an 89 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. The win was the third in seven starts for Soldier's Dancer, a gelded son of Lost Soldier who began his career racing under a $32,000 claiming tag.

Hunky Dory finally ready

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Everything is hunky dory with Hunky Dory, which means trainer Bruce Dillenbeck has his hands full.

Hunky Dory, a talented but headstrong and rambunctious mare, is ready to make her return to the races in Thursday's Bay Meadows feature, a $40,000 starter allowance for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs. She will face six rivals as she makes her first start since Aug. 5, 2005.

"She's very unique," said Dillenbeck, who owns and trains the 5-year-old homebred daughter of Corslew.

If Mocha Queen's going out, this is fitting spot

Mocha Queen, winning the Zenobia Empress in July, may be competing in her final race Thursday.

"She absolutely loves it," said Mike Lauer, the trainer who co-bred and co-owns Mocha Queen.

When the $58,500 feature race is run Thursday over the Churchill turf, Mocha Queen, 5, will be racing for what might well be the final time. Although she owns just six wins, she has proven herself a true battler, earning checks in a variety of turf sprint stakes while taking on all the top turf sprinters.

Attard once again in the hunt

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sid Attard wound up as the leading trainer at the Woodbine meeting last year, with 68 winners. But Attard was second-best when it came to the Sovereign Award voting for his category, with Reade Baker taking the outstanding trainer award and finishing as the leader in money earned and stakes races won.

After clicking with 5 of 11 starters last week, Attard, 56, finds himself within one win of Baker's meet-leading total of 67 heading into the final four weeks of the 2006 Woodbine meeting.

Woodbine: Strike Softly scores

Jockey Todd Kabel won the $151,200 Jammed Lovely Stakes for the third consecutive year, riding Strike Softly at Woodbine.

Strike Softly loomed into contention on the turn and overtook London Snow at the eighth pole before drawing away for a 3 1/4-length victory. Seductively finished 1 1/4 lengths back of London Snow in third in the eight-horse field of Ontario-foaled 3-year-old fillies.

Strike Softly completed the distance in 1:24.51, and returned $6 as the favorite. She banked $90,000 for her owner/breeder, Sam-Son Farm.

Third in row for May Day Vow

May Day Vow held off heavy pressure from odds-on favorite G?City Gal to extend her winning streak to three in the $64,950 Top Secret Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Aqueduct.

Ridden by Mike Luzzi for trainer Mike Hushion, May Day Vow ($17.60) set the pace and outfought G City Gal, the 2-5 choice, to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. The time was 1:09.53 for six furlongs on the fast track.

Minefield spectacular in 2nd start

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After a 2-year-old named Minefield won a Churchill Downs maiden race by 8o1/2 lengths on May 14, there was plenty of speculation about how the colt could be the next star in the Todd Pletcher barn.

But sore shins and a subsequent illness precluded the Silver Deputy colt from making his second start - until Saturday, when he merely looped all six of his rivals after trailing early to register an impressive, 3 3/4-length triumph in a seven-furlong entry-level allowance at Churchill.

Citronnade rallies

Citronnade won her second stakes in three starts in the $63,500 Audrey Skirball-Kenis Stakes at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

Citronnade ($12.40), ridden by David Flores, ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:49.44, closing from fifth in a field of 11 3-year-old fillies to win by three-quarters of a length over Zoemeg. Grande Melody, the 8-5 favorite, finished third.

Owned by Frank Stronach and trained by Bobby Frankel, Citronnade has won 4 of 7 starts and $162,800.

Smitty's Sunshine upsets

Smitty's Sunshine, ridden by Robby Albarado, turned back a racelong bid from favored Nicole's Dream and went on to victory in Sunday's $116,400 Pent Up Kiss at Churchill Downs.

Smitty's Sunshine took sole command soon after the field of eight fillies and mares straightened for home, then had enough left to finish three-quarters of a length clear of a belated bid by Beautiful Bets.

Nicole's Dream, who was making the 53rd and final start of her illustrious career, wound up just another neck back in third.

Rocky Gulch a millionaire after Classic win

Rocky Gulch became the first New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred to surpass $1 million in earnings on Sunday when he outgamed El Minuto for a neck win in the $212,100 New Mexico Cup Classic at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M.

The race was one of 11 stakes, all for New Mexico-breds, run on the $2?million New Mexico Cup card. There were seven races for Thoroughbreds and four stakes for Quarter Horses on the richest day of racing at Zia.
