Selvatica looks formidable

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Selvatica's four-race winning streak has struck fear in rival trainers with starters in Friday's $53,000 Manta Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Both David Hofmans, who trains Bella Banissa, and John Sadler, who starts Wild Storm, consider Selvatica to be the mare to beat in the six-furlong turf race.

Jeff Mullins, who trains Selvatica for Granja Vista Del Rio Stable, agrees with their opinion.

"She will be tough," Mullins said.

Extreme Day gets another chance to succeed

MIAMI - After Calder's first attempt to run its innovative Extreme Day card on July 22 went slightly awry due to the weather, track management could have easily thrown in the towel and said "wait 'til next year." Instead, they immediately rescheduled the event, which will now be held over Thanksgiving weekend on Nov. 25.

Meadow Breeze pointed for Princess

Meadow Breeze, the Grade 1 Matron winner who is now based at Delta Downs, is being pointed for the $300,000 Delta Princess there on Dec. 1, said her trainer, Carl Deville. Meadow Breeze won the prep for the race on Nov. 3, in the $100,000 My Trusty Cat. It was the first time the filly, who is 2, had started around two turns.

"Everything we've asked her to do so far, she's done it," said Deville.

Hard Spun creates buzz

It's way too early to begin making comparisons to Afleet Alex, but 2-year-old colt Hard Spun has already stirred up some excitement at Delaware Park.

A television crew and writers from two metropolitan daily newspapers were at the track on Tuesday to watch Hard Spun score his second dominating victory in as many starts.

Racing on the medication Lasix for the first time over a sloppy track, Hard Spun splashed his way to a five-length win over four other 2-year-olds in the $61,900 Fort Penn Stakes. He ran the six furlongs in 1:10.40 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90.

Forest Code might be Pletcher's first

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Cushion Track remains the dominant theme of the autumn meet at Hollywood Park, but there is a new look on turf, also.

Six-furlong grass races, which begin in a new chute that joins the backstretch of the main turf course, have gained popularity rapidly, and they are the two best races on Thursday.

One is the featured race 7, a second-level allowance for fillies and mares in which a field of eight runs for a $46,000 purse. Earlier on the card, in race 4, a first-level turf sprint allowance for 2-year-olds attracted a field of eight.

Stolen Star dangerous when fresh

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Thursday's late pick four sequence at Aqueduct attracted 49 horses, including a field of 13 New York-bred fillies and mares going a mile in race 8.

The baker's dozen in the race, for $30,000 optional claimers, includes the Barclay Tagg-trained entry of Factual Contender and Dancy's Angel; the Del Carroll-trained entry of Miss Baba and Keen Spirit; and several who have campaigned on grass for most of the season, notably Stag Dancer, a winner of her last three starts, and Whateverwillbwillb, recently stakes placed on firm and yielding turf in overnight events.

Wadekar's task softer than last time

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Wadekar competed against quality opposition in a recent $80,000 claimer and should be a factor in Thursday's Woodbine feature, a 6 1/2-furlong allowance.

Wadekar nearly won an $80,000 claimer, run on the inner dirt track Aug. 16, following a layoff. Two weeks later, he won a first-level allowance over 6 1/2 furlongs on the all-weather surface, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 76.
