Coa gets 300th win on NYRA circuit

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Eibar Coa joined a select group of riders Friday, when he recorded his 300th win of the year on the New York Racing Association circuit.

Coa became just the fourth rider to accomplish the feat, joining Angel Cordero and Mike Smith - who both did it twice - and Steve Cauthen, who set the NYRA single-season record for wins with 433 in 1977. Coa's 300th victory came aboard Significant Other in Friday's fourth race, and his 301st and 302nd wins came later on the card, aboard Sir Tyler T and Spooky Mulder.

Undefeated Sierra Nights steps up

ALBANY, Calif. - Sierra Nights has yet to do a thing wrong in two starts.

She'll try to win her third straight start in Sunday's Golden Gate Fields feature, tackling seven rivals in a first-level allowance race for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles.

Robb plot full of 'Sopranos' twists

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - A well-connected uncle seeks revenge on his niece's family after they stole fame and fortune from him in New York. Sounds like a plot for an upcoming episode of "The Sopranos."

Well, it sort of is. It is also the storyline for Sunday's $65,000 Alex M. Robb Handicap at Aqueduct, where Carminooch seeks to avenge a one-length loss to Accountforthegold in last month's Grade 3 Stuyvesant Handicap.

Valbenny adapts quickly to U.S.

ARCADIA, Calif. - With an interrupted preparation schedule and modest form in Europe, Valbenny was somewhat ignored in the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes at Hollywood Park on Nov. 25.

That changed in the final furlong. Valbenny caught everyone's attention when she rallied from 10th in a field of 12 to win the one-mile turf race by three-quarters of a length.

"It was a pleasant surprise," trainer Paddy Gallagher said.

New challenge for R Big Stuff

PHOENIX - So far it has been a walk in the park for R Big Stuff to prove he's the best juvenile Arizona-bred in training. He gets a chance Sunday to show he's the best 2-year-old on this circuit overall when he leads a solid field of 10 2-year-old males in Turf Paradise's Lost in the Fog Juvenile at 6 1/2 furlongs.

The $50,000 stakes, formerly called the Arizona Juvenile, was named in honor of the 2005 champion sprinter who set a course record in the 2004 Arizona Juvenile and died earlier this year from cancer.

No Royal Copenhagen if Furl Sail goes on dirt

NEW ORLEANS - Royal Copenhagen will top a strong field in the $75,000 Furl Sail Handicap for fillies and mares Sunday at Fair Grounds, but only if it is run on the grass. The race is scheduled to be run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf course, but the forecast of rain could move it to the main track.

Winner of the Grade 3 Pucker Up at Arlington Park last year, Royal Copenhagen is part of a string of horses sent by Chicago-based trainer Chris Block to Richard Scherer at Fair Grounds.

For King's Drama, a virtual sprint

ARCADIA, Calif. - The veteran gelding King's Drama has raced in so many marathons the past three seasons that 1 1/8 miles in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Handicap is a mere sprint.

The "short" distance might be reason to consider King's Drama, the 121-pound highweight, vulnerable Sunday in the $150,000 San Gabriel at Santa Anita. Or not.

Distance "is not a problem," trainer Bobby Frankel said about King's Drama. "He was a miler when I got him [from Europe]. The only reason I stretched him out was money."

Colonial cuts Turf Cup purse

Colonial Downs has cut the purse for its Grade 3 Colonial Turf Cup from $1 million to $750,000 for the 2007 meet and will put the $250,000 difference into overnight purses.

"It was a matter of sitting down, as we do periodically, with our horsemen and figuring out how we want the 2007 meet to look," said Ian Stewart, Colonial Downs president and chief financial officer. "Everybody recognized that we probably needed to increase overnight purses, and the decision to cut the Colonial Turf Cup purse was part of that compromise."
