Broadway Producer finally gets it

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer John Terranova tried everything he could think of to keep Broadway Producer from becoming a flop. He ran him short and long, with blinkers and without, on turf and dirt. He even dropped him into a couple of claiming races last summer. All to no avail.

But in the end, all it took to make Broadway Producer finally produce was time.

Broadway Producer will put his two-race win streak on the line Thursday at Gulfstream Park against second-level allowance competition in a $48,000 turf race for older horses at 1 1/16 miles.

Bison City moving to Woodbine

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The $250,000 Bison City Stakes, a fixture at Fort Erie for most of its existence, now will be run at Woodbine.

The Bison City, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies which is the second leg of the Canadian triple tiara, did not fit in with Fort Erie's reduced purse structure this year and an agreement was made to move the race back to Woodbine.

The Bison City, inaugurated at Fort Erie in 1954, was run here from 1977 through 1979.

Wild ride for Circular Quay

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - There are rough trips, like the one Lawyer Ron overcame to win his 2007 debut here Sunday, and the type of trip Circular Quay encountered the previous afternoon at the Fair Grounds in the Risen Star Stakes.

Or as Todd Pletcher, the trainer of both Lawyer Ron and Circular Quay, put it, "There is bad luck and then there is that." The "that" referred to the near-disaster that befell Circular Quay when he ran into the 80-1 Slew's Tizzy after the longshot clipped heels and unseated jockey James Graham at the top of the stretch of the Risen Star.

Lofty hopes linger with Cobalt Blue

ARCADIA, Calif. - Cobalt Blue was frequently mentioned as a 2-year-old to watch last summer after a flashy maiden win at Hollywood Park. He disappeared from that list after finishing seventh in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar, his final start of 2006.

Owned by Merv Griffin, Cobalt Blue missed the last of 2006 because of injury, but returns in a $50,000 allowance race at six furlongs at Santa Anita on Wednesday. Trainer Doug O'Neill is using the race to gauge whether Cobalt Blue deserves to start in a Kentucky Derby prep in March.

The Championship, which was restricted to 3-year-olds who have gone through the sales ring of an OBS auction, was the featured race on a non-parimutuel card of six stakes.

Roman lets IEAH off the hook

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Bettors who pounded Lawrence the Roman to 1-2 favoritism in Saturday's Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct had to rip up their tickets when the colt finished fifth. But part-owners IEAH Stables and Sanford Robbins were afforded a refund by the colt's original owner, Lawrence Roman.

Two days before Lawrence the Roman ran in the Whirlaway, Roman sold half-interest in the New York-bred colt to the International Equine Acquisitions Holdings Stable and Robbins. Two days later, Roman let IEAH and Robbins out of the deal, wiring their money back by noon on Monday.

Hoping a reprieve is granted

SAN MATEO, Calif. - An all-too-familiar question hovers over Wednesday's start of the 50-day Bay Meadows spring race meet.

Is this the final year of racing at the historic racetrack?

"I think, from our perspective, we are pursuing racing dates," said track president F. Jack Liebau. "We will seek an exemption from the California Horse Racing Board about having to install an artificial surface for 2008. If they do not give us an exemption, we will shut down. If they do deny us an exemption, the repercussions will be in their hands."
