Invasor buckles down for Donn

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - It was a weird 72 hours in New York racing.

On Friday, a Belmont Stakes winner raced over Aqueduct's inner track, though Jazil could do no better than second. On Saturday, a January day when the temperature reached 72 degrees at nearby JFK Airport, a 71-year-old jockey rode in a race, although Frank Amonte Sr. finished last aboard on Eightyninecentsday, trained by his 46-year-old son, Frank Amonte Jr.

Capping off the peculiar weekend was the sight of likely Horse of the Year Invasor working out over Belmont Park's training track on Sunday morning.

$400,000 carryover incentive to dive in

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - A uninspiring Wednesday card at Aqueduct that would make even the heartiest New York horseplayer contemplate taking a day off is jazzed up considerably by a pick six carryover of $403,438.

Victories by back-to-back 50-1 shots Sunday meant a third straight day of futility for pick six players. Fifteen of the horses running in Wednesday's pick six sequence have gone off at 50-1 or higher at least once. Four of the six races in the sequence are for maidens. The inner track should be fast as rain ended early Monday afternoon.

Here's a race-by-race analysis:

McCarthy comes home to get first win

ARCADIA, Calif. - For the time being, Michael McCarthy is just minding the store for his boss, trainer Todd Pletcher, who is under suspension through the beginning of February. But there was no hiding McCarthy's joy and relief when he won his first race as a trainer on Sunday at Santa Anita, when the highly regarded 3-year-old filly Rags to Riches rolled to a six-length victory against maidens.

Round Pond gets back to business

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Round Pond earned herself a little rest and relaxation following her impressive victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. But now it's time to get back to work to prepare for her 2007 campaign, which could kick off in the Grade 2 Rampart Handicap here on March 11.

Round Pond breezed an easy three furlongs in 38 seconds at Palm Meadows on Sunday morning, her first work since she rallied to a 4 1/4-length triumph in the Distaff on Nov. 4.

Allowance a fallback for Matz with Bee Charmer

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Michael Matz has been trying to get Bee Charmer into a stakes race ever since the Irish-bred won his U.S. debut at Keeneland in mid-October. Having failed to do so, however, Matz will go to Plan B, which is to bring Bee Charmer, a lightly raced turf specialist, back under second-level allowance conditions in Wednesday's $48,000 feature race at Gulfstream Park.

Night Chapter invades to win

Night Chapter, from Southern California, swept in and took the money Saturday as he drew away to take Turf Paradise's $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Handicap, the marquee event of a stakes tripleheader.

Owned and trained by Bobby Frankel, Night Chapter chased pacesetter Wait in Line early in the mile turf event, took command into the lane, and drew off to win by 2 1/4 lengths under Brice Blanc. Wait in Line stayed on and finished in a dead heat for second with another California invader, True Dancer, who rallied from midpack.

Bai and Bai uncatchable

Bai and Bai ($8.20) rated nicely on the lead, opened up into the lane, and had enough left to hold off odds-on Victorina to win Saturday's $59,175 Muir Woods at Golden Gate Fields.

Hustled to the lead by jockey Roberto Gonzalez, Bai and Bai relaxed down the backstretch. As the field began to close on her approaching the quarter pole, she shook clear and opened a two-length lead into the stretch.

Victorina, under Russell Baze, cut into the lead but was three-quarters of a length back at the end of the 1 1/16-mile race, won in 1:42.71.

Golden Dreamer wires Ruthless

Golden Dreamer broke on top and kept right on going, recording a front-running, 3 3/4-length victory over Special Dream in the $67,965 Ruthless Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

The win gave Paraneck Stable, trainer Alan Klanfer, and jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. a sweep of Aqueduct's weekend stakes. That triumvirate also took Saturday's Count Fleet Stakes with Pink Viper.

Some Ghost repeats

Some Ghost defended his title in the $100,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap at Sunland Park on Sunday, when he rallied for a neck win over El Minuto. It was another 4 3/4 lengths back to Romeos Wilson.

Rocky Gulch, the favorite, finished 11th.

Some Ghost ($12.60) raced in seventh early in the 1 1/16-mile race for New Mexico-breds, as Excess Folly led the field through an opening half-mile in 47.15 seconds. Some Ghost rallied through the stretch, and covered the distance over a fast track in 1:144.61.

Ricardo Jaime rode the winner for trainer Jess Alley.

Cintronnade rolls to victory in San Gorgonio

ARCADIA, Calif. - Bobby Frankel was a sensational handicapper before he became a Hall of Fame trainer. That background came in handy on Sunday. He looked at the past performances for the Grade 2, $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap, saw that none of the seven runners had much speed, and figured if he might as well step up and take it.
