Turfway cancels Sunday card

Due to the extreme winter weather conditions, Turfway Park has canceled their live race card for Sunday. They are open for simulcasting, with gates opening at 11 a.m. Live racing is expected to resume as regularly scheduled on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

Over the Edge comes through

Over the Edge got a perfect trip before holding off Miss A. Bomb to post a popular half-length victory Saturday in the $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Confidently ridden by Miguel Mena, Over the Edge took command after turning for home in the 6 1/2-furlong race for 3-year-old fillies, then was kept to urging when finishing in 1:16.46 over Polytrack. Over the Edge, a Thunder Gulch filly owned and bred by G. Watts Humphrey, returned $3.40 as the heavy favorite.

Friendly Island stalks, then cruises

ARCADIA, Calif. - An insight into the ability of a key rival helped Garrett Gomez guide Friendly Island to a convincing victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $147,000 Palos Verdes Handicap at Santa Anita.

Gomez, who won with his first five mounts on Saturday's program, had ridden pacesetter Limited Creole in four of his last five starts, but opted to ride the more accomplished Friendly Island. Gomez went into the race thinking that he wanted to keep Friendly Island within range of Limited Creole throughout the six-furlong Palos Verdes.

Tampa Bay Downs: Suaveness stuns

Last in the early going, Suaveness swung wide into the stretch then roared past favored Foret in the final sixteenth of a mile to post a stunning upset win in the $60,000 Gasparilla Stakes before a season-high crowd of 7,363 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Sent off as the longest shot in the field of nine 3-year-old fillies, Suaveness returned $141.40 in her first start since October.

Oaklawn: Country Diva wows 'em

Country Diva, the longest shot on the board at 36-1, thrilled an Oaklawn Park crowd of 18,901 on a chilly afternoon, rallying for a half-length win over 28-1 shot Fast Deal in the $50,000 American Beauty Stakes. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third to Tax Refund, while favored Miss Elsie finished fourth.

Laurel: Ah Day upsets

Ah Day came back raring to go after a two-month layoff, charging home to win the $74,400 Fire Plug at Laurel over the 7-5 favorite, Crafty Schemer.

Jockey Mario Pino kept Ah Day on the rail and off the early pace of the six-furlong Fire Plug, as Kazoo went to the lead pressed by Country Moggie through an opening quarter-mile in 22.01 seconds. After Crafty Schemer, with Ryan Fogelsonger riding, came up and overtook the leaders, Pino swung Ah Day wide coming off the turn, then back inside Crafty Schemer, and took off to a 3o3/4-length victory.

Declan's Moon fails to fire again

Onetime Eclipse Award winner Declan's Moon turned in another puzzling performance, running last in an allowance race Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.

The 2004 Eclipse 2-year-old champion male, Declan's Moon won his first start as a 3-year-old but then went to the sidelines for 16 months after having a chip surgically removed from his knee.

Any Limit gets biggest win yet in First Lady

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - After watching Any Limit work five furlongs in 57.60 seconds on Tuesday in preparation for Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 First Lady Handicap, trainer Allen Jerkens considered holding her out of the race. Fortunately, Jerkens let Any Limit start, and he was rewarded with an impressive 2 1/2-length victory over a field that included Grade 1 winner Malibu Mint.
