Santos to miss 4 to 6 weeks after spill

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Jockey Jose Santos will be out a minimum of four to six weeks after suffering two compressed vertebrae, two cracked ribs, and a possible broken nose as a result of a spill he was involved in at Aqueduct on Thursday.

Meanwhile, fellow rider Ramon Dominguez - who was involved in the same spill - will miss at least the next two weeks due to severe swelling in his right knee. Doctors will perform an MRI on Dominguez's knee, but want to wait until the swelling subsides to do it. Dominguez is the leading rider at Aqueduct's inner track meet with 67 wins.

Einstein has several options

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - One couldn't blame trainer Helen Pitts if she were both disappointed and delighted over Einstein's return to the races here earlier in the week.

Einstein, winner of the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap over the turf here last winter, finished a troubled fourth under jockey Rafael Bejarano while making his first start in nearly nine months against a strong field of high-priced optional claiming rivals on Wednesday.

How long can 'Preachin' last?

Michael J. Marten/Horsephotos
Preachinatthebar's speed makes him dangerous in Sunday's San Antonio.

ARCADIA, Calif. - For the gray front-runner Preachinatthebar, 1 1/8 miles is at least a half-furlong too far, and Grade 2 class is about one notch too high.

But when he starts as the 116-pound second highweight in the $250,000 San Antonio Handicap on Sunday at Santa Anita, Preachinatthebar has one key attribute that cannot be overstated. That is, early speed.

Latest Quinonez brother keeps busy winning

Alonso Quinonez may or may not wind up as the leading rider at the long winter-spring meet at Turfway Park, but the 23-year-old apprentice would be satisfied just to keep winning races at a steady clip.

"I am so happy," said Quinonez. "I didn't know I was going to do that good. Everything is feeling real good right now."

Through Thursday at the Florence, Ky., track, Quinonez had 30 winners from a meet-high 161 mounts. Only Miguel Mena - who, like Quinonez, has Steve Elzey for his agent - had more wins, 31 through Thursday.

Low-profile Valenzuela lacks license

ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Patrick Valenzuela, who has not ridden since late November because of rib injuries and subsequent knee surgery, has not renewed his provisional license with the California Horse Racing Board and has not been in contact with his agent in more than a week.

Valenzuela, who has a history of substance abuse problems that have plagued his career, has ridden under a provisional license in recent years. The one-year license required that Valenzuela undergo occasional drug testing at the racing board's request.

Magnolia Jackson going for repeat

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - In last year's Correction Handicap, a 4-year-old New York-bred filly had her coming-out party as Magnolia Jackson upset 3-5 favorite Great Intentions to take the open-company stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs.

The same scenario could play out this year, as Towering Escape, a 4-year-old New York-bred filly who has won three consecutive allowance races, will meet Magnolia Jackson and three others in the 67th running of the Correction, to be run Sunday over Aqueduct's inner track.
