Still trying to regain old magic

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The trainer of Declan's Moon wonders the same as everyone. That is, whatever happened to the champion 2-year-old of 2004, and what can bettors expect when Declan's Moon returns Thursday at Hollywood Park?

"I have no idea," trainer Ron Ellis said. "After the last race, I really have no idea."

Who does? After winning his first five starts and an Eclipse Award, Declan's Moon went into a prolonged tailspin. Arthroscopic surgery cut short his 3-year-old campaign, and Declan's Moon finished a sharp second in his comeback last July. It was his last good race.

Repeat of last all Chromedoll needs

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Chromedoll ran a breakthrough race in her last start, and a repeat of that effort will be tough to contain in Thursday night's featured eighth race at Lone Star Park. The 7 1/2-furlong, first-level turf allowance for fillies and mares drew a field of 10.

Chromedoll will attract a lot of attention following her eight-length win over $25,000 conditioned claimers in a mile turf race at Sam Houston Race Park on March 29. She earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 81 for the win, a rating that tops all last-race Beyers in the field Thursday.

This Baze not born to saddle

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The sequence of milestones for a young man in the extended Baze family is somewhat predictable. Getting out of diapers is followed by learning how to ride horses, maybe a few seasons of Little League, and then the launch of a career as a jockey as a teenager.

Michael Baze, one of the hottest jockeys in Southern California, skipped part of that sequence.

Napinowaan can get best of six foes

CALGARY, Alberta – Napinowaan should be favored when he faces six rivals in a third-level allowance sprint in Wednesday’s seventh race here at Stampede Park.

A 4-year-old gelding, Napinowaan just missed in his seasonal bow at this six-furlong distance on April 8 when he finished third, beaten a neck, and is expected to improve off that effort.

Trainer Robertino Diodoro needed to get another work into Napinowaan, an Illinois-bred son of Indian Charlie, and ventured forth last Friday despite the three days of wet snowfall that had the cones up for training each morning.

Aqueduct: Mighty Eros, Bustin Stones impress

As impressive as they were winning their debuts, Bustin Stones and Mighty Eros were even better in their second starts Sunday, as both romped to victory in their respective divisions of the New York Stallion Stakes at Aqueduct.

In the $100,000 Times Square division for 3-year-old colts and geldings, Bustin Stones, ridden bt Ramon Dominguez, quickly recovered from a stumbling start, put away a pace challenge from favored Market Psychology, and drew off to win by 4 1/4 lengths over Smash 'Em Sammy. Keeneland: Audacious Chloe by a neck

In her first start since upsetting champion 2-year-old filly Dreaming of Anna in the Feb. 25 Gaily Gaily at Gulfstream, Audacious Chloe won the $115,700 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland by a neck over Classic Neel.

Audacious Chloe looked like a winner shortly after the start, when several fillies who were expected to show speed did not. This allowed John Velazquez aboard Audacious Chloe to make the front and establish a slow pace under limited early pressure.

On the Acorn captures San Juan

The ex-claimer On the Acorn won his first stakes on Sunday in Santa Anita's top marathon turf race, the $250,000 San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap.

The victory accomplished a meet-long goal for trainer Mike Mitchell and the six-man Indizguys partnership who claimed On the Acorn for $40,000 last November and watched him excel in recent months in longer turf races.
