Capt. Joe Blow ($5.20) stamped himself the top 3-year-old sprinter on the Arizona circuit with a smart wire-to-wire win in Sunday's $45,000 Palo Verde Stakes at Turf Paradise.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Super Freaky, beaten in her first three stakes appearances, won her turf stakes debut in Sunday's $113,400 La Habra Stakes at Santa Anita, a race marred by a breakdown and a disqualification.
Super Freaky ($15.40) ran about 6 1/2 furlongs on the hillside turf course in 1:12.66 under jockey Jon Court. She avoided the trouble that plagued some runners.
Super Freaky was second early, behind a torrid pace of 20.99 and 42.74 seconds set by Voulez Vous, and took the lead when the field crossed onto the main turf oval.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - With only two wins from his last 16 starts dating back to the summer of 2004, it seemed like Silver Tree's best days were behind him. But the 7-year-old son of Hennessy turned back time Sunday at Gulfstream Park, setting a course record winning the Grade 3 Appleton Handicap.
Gary Contessa didn't need his best New York-bred mare to win Sundays Broadway Handicap at Aqueduct. One of his bevy of understudies filled in quite admirably.
Opting to scratch morning-line favorite and defending Broadway winner Magnolia Jackson, Contessa went with 22-1 shot Waytotheleft, who received a rail-skimming, off-the-pace ride from Ramon Dominguez to win the $72,480 Broadway Handicap by 3 1/4 lengths. Great Lady K rallied to get second by three-quarters of a length over the pacesetting Slew Motion.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Wait a While, last year's 3-year-old champion filly, launched her 4-year-old campaign in style Sunday at Gulfstream Park, taking command of the Grade 3, $100,000 Honey Fox entering the first turn and rolling to a front-running, 1 1/4-length victory over Precious Kitten.
It was another two lengths back to Chaibia in third. Aunt Henny, Miss Shop, Brazilian, and Aerocat completed the order of finish.
Speedway dueled for the lead and went on to a 2 1/4-length win over I Spy Wolfie in Saturday night's $45,000 Texas Heritage Stakes for 3-year-olds at Sam Houston Race Park. It was another neck back in third to Makeithapencaptain.
Speedway ($9.60) led the field through fractions of 23.92 for the opening quarter, 47.89 for the half-mile mark, and 1:13.12 for six furlongs in the one-mile race. He increased his advantage in the stretch, and covered the distance over a fast track in 1:39.78.
Larry Taylor rode the winner for trainer Bernie Flint.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Kip Deville came to California last fall as a three-time stakes winner with ample promise. Saturday, the 4-year-old colt joined the list of the nation's top turf milers.
Kip Deville won his first Grade 1 stakes in Saturday's $300,000 Frank Kilroe Mile, a hard-fought win that has to be considered the best victory of his career. The Kilroe featured seven runners that won graded stakes in 2006.
ARCADIA, Calif. - After four months on the sidelines, Great Hunter returned to the races with a perfect comeback on Saturday at Santa Anita, scoring a 1 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $200,000 Robert Lewis Stakes while looking as though there was plenty in reserve.
Great Hunter ($3.80) was facing eight seemingly overmatched 3-year-olds, and he dispatched them with ease, despite a stubborn bid from Sam P. What was more impressive, though, was the way Great Hunter galloped out, as though he was just getting warmed up going the 1 1/16 miles of the Lewis.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - This time, Corinthian gets to keep his Gulfstream Park stakes win.
One year after being disqualified from first place in the Fountain of Youth Stakes here, Corinthian hung on for a neck victory over Hesanoldsalt in the Grade 2, $350,000 Gulfstream Park Handicap for his first official career stakes win. Remembering what happened last year when Corinthian veered in on two horses in the stretch of the Fountain of Youth, trainer Jimmy Jerkens was nervous after Corinthian held off Hesanoldsalt at the wire.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Michael Matz, who became the biggest story on the Kentucky Derby trail and beyond a year ago with Barbaro, may find himself back on the Derby road again this spring following Chelokee's game victory over a strong field of first-level allowance 3-year-olds going a mile and one-eighth here Saturday.
