Frequent flyer Derby prospects

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Notional and Stormello are not only two of the most talented 3-year-olds on the Kentucky Derby trail, they are also the most traveled. At least, they will be after they complete the journey that will bring them from California to south Florida for next Saturday's $1 million Florida Derby.

Stormello has already made the cross country trip once, embarking from a long and eventful plane ride to finish a game second, a nose behind Scat Daddy, in the Grade 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes.

San Franciso Mile trimmed to $300,000

Twelve stakes worth $1,150,000 will be offered during the seven-week spring meeting at Golden Gate Fields, which begins April 25.

Included among the stakes is Northern California's only Grade 2 race, the San Francisco Mile, to be run on the opening Saturday of the meet, April 28. The other graded races are the Grade 3 Golden Gate Fields Breeders' Cup Handicap and the Grade 3 Berkeley.

Turf Paradise: Apprentice gets her first triple

Apprentice Lori Keith, 23, had her first three-win day Sunday at Turf Paradise. She brought home consecutive winners Uncle Ed ($7.80) in the sixth and Ratifier ($15) in the seventh. She capped her day by taking the nightcap with AKA Quickdraw ($7). Keith, from England, came right back Monday to score a wire-to-wire upset in the fifth race with Point Me the Way ($27.20).

Sam Houston: Dreamsandvisions rady for stakes

Dreamsandvisions could move into graded stakes company after his big win last Saturday in the $45,000 Spring Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park. Trainer Steven Duke said the horse is under serious consideration for the Grade 3, $300,000 Texas Mile at Lone Star Park on April 28. Dreamsandvisions is also being nominated to stakes at Lone Star and Oaklawn Park.

"I'm leaning toward the Texas Mile," said Duke. "I know the Grade 3 is a big step for him, but he'd probably do all right in there.

Retama: Horse Player World Series berth at stake

Retama Park near San Antonio is holding a pair of handicapping tournaments over the next few weeks, with one of them a qualifier for the 2008 Horse Player World Series in Las Vegas, the track announced. The qualifier, being held in conjunction with Coast Casinos, will be held at Retama on April 7.

The winner of the qualifier will receive entry into the Horse Player World Series, as well as airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals. The first-place prize for the 2007 finals of the Horse Player World Series was $357,500.

Fonner: Williams the younger headed West

The father-son jockey rivalry comes to an end this weekend, as apprentice Dylan Williams will pack up his tack and move to Southern California next week after accepting an offer from agent Jim Pegram to try his hand on the major racing circuit.

Williams's father, jockey R.D. Williams, said that the decision to relocate was made Tuesday, and that Dylan will travel west with his mother, Michelle.

"I'll stay here and get some of my horses back," the elder Williams joked. "If he doesn't catch on, then he can always come back here in six weeks and go to Canterbury."

Fairmount : Two get second wins of meet

Melana and Chipotle became the first multiple winners of the Fairmount meet with victories in Tuesday's two allowance features. Melana, following up on her opening-day maiden win, held off a challenge from the stakes-placed Cloudy and Rain to capture a first-level allowance going 5 1/2 furlongs. The 3-year-old Melana remains undefeated for trainer Kelly Ackerman, who acquired her from trainer Helen Pitts earlier this year.

Delta: Fass Feat may stretch out in next

Fass Feat ran his career record to 4 for 4 with his win in the $75,000 Bayou State for Louisiana-breds last weekend at Delta Downs, and now his connections are shopping for his next race. He has won his four starts by a combined margin of 24 1/2 lengths, and won his two-turn debut in the seven-furlong Bayou State.

"We're just going to wait for a good spot to come up," said Emile Schwandt, who trains Fass Feat for breeder P and L Racing. "We'll just take them one race at a time."

Greeley's Legacy flashes old promise

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - A year ago, trainer George Weaver was on the Kentucky Derby trail with Greeley's Legacy. They never made the Derby, but Greeley's Legacy did finish a distant fifth behind Bernardini in the Preakness before going to the sidelines for an extended vacation. Now Greeley's Legacy, a son of Mr. Greeley, appears ready to return to stakes competition following his impressive second-level allowance victory going 1 1/8 miles here on Monday.
