Fourty Niners Son finds niche in San Luis Rey

ARCADIA, Calif. - Fourty Niners Son's victory in Saturday's $200,000 San Luis Rey Handicap at Santa Anita may have set the tone for the 6-year-old horse's 2007 campaign.

The Grade 2 San Luis Rey Handicap was Fourty Niners Son's first win over 1 1/2 miles on turf, a distance that could be his specialty this year.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Fourty Niners Son ($8.80) finished a length in front of Notable Guest, and was timed in 2:27.50. Prospect Park finished third, with 5-2 favorite One Off last in the field of seven.

Peppers Pride now nine for nine

Peppers Pride kept her record unblemished, posting her ninth win in as many starts with a handy win in Saturday's $100,000 Sydney Valentini Handicap at Sunland Park. Owned by Joseph Allen and trained by Joel Marr, the 3-year-old New Mexico-bred daughter of Desert God stalked the pace in third in the mile event for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares, came with a wide run into the lane to surget to the lead and edged away in the final furlong to win by 1 1/4 lengths over six rivals.

Hard Spun rebounds in Lane's End

Hard Spun easily leaves the pacesetters behind to take the Grade 2 Lane's End by 3 1/4 lengths.

FLORENCE, Ky. - Hard Spun got back into the Kentucky Derby picture in a big way Saturday when he ran off to a dominating 3 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $500,000 Lane's End Stakes at Turfway Park.

Rebounding from the only defeat of his career, Hard Spun was always prominent under Mario Pino before gliding to the front midway through the far turn of the 1 1/8-mile Lane's End. Down the stretch, no serious competition materialized, as Sedgefield used a steady run to finish second, another 3 1/4 lengths before Joe Got Even in a field of 12 3-year-olds.

Junior College upsets 3-5 Semaphore Man

Junior College overtook 3-5 favorite Semaphore Man in the stretch to win the $50,000 Hot Springs Stakes at Oaklawn Park by three-quarters of a length. Semaphore Man held second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher Four Sevens.

Saint Anddan leads Kenner for every step

NEW ORLEANS - Saint Anddan ran them off their feet in the $150,000 Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds on Saturday, leading the way home in the fastest six-furlong timing of the 2006-07 meet. Leading jockey Joe Talamo hustled the 5-year-old son of A.P. Indy away from the gate and he led at every call under pressure from Smoke Mountain through a quarter in 21.65 seconds and a 44.85 half-mile.

"When he gets to the lead he doesn't stop," said Talamo.

Dominican fires off long layoff

FLORENCE, Ky. - Dominican showed he was a classy 2-year-old by finishing third behind Tiz Wonderful and Any Given Saturday in last fall's Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.

Saturday in the $100,000 Rushaway Stakes on the Lane's End undercard at Turfway Park, Dominican showed he is just as good, if not better, as a 3-year-old. Facing a good group of second-tier stakes runners, he won with ease in his first start of the year, scoring by five lengths over longshot Trust Your Luck.

Etude much the best in Private Terms

Etude needed four starts to finally clear the maiden ranks, but since he learned how to win the 3-year-old colt has been unstoppable.

Moving from a first-level allowance into stakes company, Etude ($6.40) cruised to his third consecutive victory in the $72,000 Private Terms at Laurel Park. He overtook Saratoga Lulaby in the upper stretch and widened his advantage while under a hand ride to the wire, finishing 5 3/4 lengths in front. He covered a mile on a fast track in 1:37.97

Maiden grad Duveen takes graded stakes

Duveen came into Saturday's $150,000 Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park still eligible for his entry-level allowance condition. He came out a graded stakes winner after outgaming 9-5 favorite Soldier's Dancer in the final strides to post a nose decision in the Grade 3 turf race.

'Awesome' ends long drought

Benefiting from a recent optional claiming prep, Awesomewithbroads was too sharp for five rivals in the $47,700 Honey Mark Stakes at Hawthorne on Saturday. Rating in mid-pack for much of the trip down the backside, Awesomewithbroads bid for the lead at the top of the stretch and drew off for a 1 1/2-length victory.

Chavez scores aboard Maryfield

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - For so many years in the 1990's, the Aqueduct winner's circle was home for Jorge Chavez. Now riding in Southern California, Chavez proved he could go home again.

Despite breaking poorly from the rail aboard Maryfield, Chavez was able to guide the 6-year-old mare from last to first to win Saturday's Grade 2, $158,000 Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap by 2 1/4 lengths. Candy Box, part of a hot early pace with May Day Vow, finished second by three-quarters of a length over Oprah Winney.
